Not like 55,000 years in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added \u200bthat it was\u2064 not possible to be indigenous in two countries at \u200bthe same time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. Peters has doubled down on the statement in a series of \u2063follow-up interviews and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/journalists-mourn-as-cnn-exec-who-fueled-trumps-rise-announces-plans-to-leave-network\/\" title=\"Journalists Mourn as CNN Exec Who Fueled Trump\u2019s Rise Announces Plans to Leave Network\">public appearances<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Reaction<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leaders from \u200bthe centre-left Labour Party, centre-right National \u200bParty, and libertarian ACT \u200chave decried Mr. Peter\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>Labour Prime Minister \u200cChris Hipkins said Mr. Peters\u2019 statement was \u201canother example\u201d of the kind of \u201cdivisive policies\u201d that NZ First \u200dwould bring to a National-ACT-NZ First \u200ccoalition government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;M\u0101ori are indigenous to New Zealand,&#8221; Mr. Hipkins told\u200c reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, \u2062National Leader Christopher Luxon told reporters\u200c that Mr. Peters was wrong and Maori were \u201cabsolutely\u201d \u200bindigenous to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, ACT Leader\u2062 David Seymour \u200ddescribed Mr. Peters\u2019 comments as \u201cugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cFor what it&#8217;s worth, M\u0101ori\u2062 are indigenous\u2062 by the definition,&#8221; Mr. Seymour <a href=\"https:\/\/tkr.ro\/e\/EEH4RN8BMHBK6yDW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Stuff\u200d News.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite the backlash, Mr. Peters has stood by his comments, calling it \u201cplain\u2063 fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said all iwi\u2062 (people), including his own, knew their whakapapa (genealogy) \u2062and narrative.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cI was stating \u200bwhat we\u2019ve all known,\u201d he\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/audio\/player?audio_id=2018906528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Radio New Zealand. \u201cI was just stating the obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Peters questioned why stating a fact would blow into such a big controversy, noting two late M\u0101ori leaders, Sir Peter Buck, and Sir Apirana Ngata, \u200bbacked such views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want this country to be united\u200b going forward.
