in Recruitment and Retention: Federal Report<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-comp-caption text-[14px] leading-[18px]\">8\/30\/2023<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"shrink-0 basis-[120px]\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/canadian-air-force-facing-a-personnel-crisis-in-recruitment-and-retention-federal-report-5483425\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leslie Brown, \u2062a spokeswoman for the Air Force Recruiting Service, \u200dtold NTD News\u200d that the service\u200c is likely to be about 2,700 recruits short of the\u2063 fiscal year goal.<\/p>\n<p>However, she mentioned that these numbers are\u2064 still\u200d estimates and the service has one \u200cmore week to ship\u2063 recruits before final recruiting\u2064 figures are posted for the year.<\/p>\n<p>This 10 percent miss marks the first time \u2062the Air Force has failed to meet its active-duty recruiting \u2062quota since \u200b1999.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite the \u2063shortfall, Mr. Kendall\u200d expressed some\u2063 optimism in his comments with Military.com.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m overall \u2062encouraged\u2063 by where we are in \u200drecruiting, but we still have a lot of work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kendall said \u2064the Air Force is preparing\u200c to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/battle-for-talent-is-intense-us-air-force-set-to-miss-recruiting-goal-by-10-percent\/\" title=\"US Air Force to Fall Short of Recruiting Goal by 10% in Fierce Talent Battle.\">address long-standing \u2063recruiting issues<\/a> and\u2063 hopes to improve\u200b matters next year.<\/p>\n<p>While \u2063the Air Force missed its recruiting \u200bgoal, the U.S. Space Force\u2014which is\u2064 organized under the purview \u2062of the Department of\u2062 the Air Force\u2014did manage to overshoot its recruiting quote for the 2023 fiscal year. The Space Force brought in 517 new enlisted personnel, about \u2064110 percent of \u2063the 472 recruit goal the branch set out for \u200cat the start\u2062 of \u200cthe 2023 fiscal \u2064year.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force&#8217;s 10 percent recruiting miss this year \u200bcomes \u200bafter all military\u2064 branches struggled with recruiting in fiscal year \u20642022.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>While the Air Force \u200bmet its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/air-force-to-decrease-body-weight-standards-for-entry-as-americans-increasingly-too-fat-to-enlist\/\" title=\"Air Force To Decrease Body Weight Standards For Entry As Americans Increasingly Too Fat To Enlist\">active-duty recruiting goal<\/a> in fiscal year 2022, the service\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recruiting.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3176626\/afrs-commander-commends-total-force-recruiters-hard-work-toward-fy22-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> missing its goals for attracting new Air Force Reserve \u200dand Air National Guard troops.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service \u2063Commander Major General Garrett Harencak administrates an oath ceremony for the new recruits outside the renovated Times Square Recruiting Station in New York on Nov. 10, 2017. (Jewel Samad\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The Navy also hit its recruiting goals for\u200d active-duty \u200cpersonnel last year but fell short when it \u2064came to \u2063recruiting\u2064 new active and\u2063 reserve\u2062 officers and reserve enlisted personnel. The service\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/3177917\/navy-recruiting-command-announces-mission-results-for-fiscal-year-2022-and-goal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a> falling short by\u200c 209 active-duty officers, 378\u200d reserve officers, and 1,958 reserve enlisted personnel.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The Marine Corps \u200cwas the only U.S. military \u200dbranch to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/3187054\/marine-corps-recruiting-command-makes-mission-prepares-for-challenging-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> meeting\u2064 its recruiting \u200dgoals in all its \u2062categories and components last year.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>It was the Army, however, that saw the largest recruiting miss in the 2022 fiscal year. The service\u2062 fell about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/us-army-misses-recruiting-goal-secretary-confirms-4768306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15,000 \u2062recruits short<\/a> of its 60,000 recruit goal for \u200bfiscal year 2022, a 25 percent shortfall.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Recruiting shortfalls in one year can also\u2063 have a compounding effect the following year.<\/p>\n<p>In a typical recruiting year, the\u200d military branches often meet their \u2063annual recruiting goal and \u200dthen have a pool of potential new recruits left over in delayed-entry programs, \u200dgiving them a headstart on the\u200b next year&#8217;s recruiting drive.<\/p>\n<p>The Marine Corps, for example, typically has half of its\u200c recruiting numbers lined \u200cup at the start of every fiscal year just\u2063 from the number of candidates held over\u2063 from the \u2064previous year and kept in the service&#8217;s delayed entry program. At the start of\u2062 the 2023 fiscal year, however, the\u2064 Marine \u200cCorps only\u200c had \u200babout 30 percent of its recruiting quota ready in \u2062its delayed\u200b entry program.<\/p>\n<p>The other military branches also had\u200b to dig \u2064into their delayed \u2064entry candidate pools at the end of the fiscal year 2022, \u2063shorting\u2063 their 2023 recruiting drive to meet their 2022 goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using Air Force lexicon, I\u2019d say we\u2019re doing a \u2018dead-stick \u200blanding\u2019 as we come into the end of fiscal year\u2063 \u201922, and we\u2019re going to have to turn around on Oct. \u200d1 and\u200d the start of the new fiscal \u2064year \u2064and do an after-burner takeoff,&#8221; \u2064retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas said of the recruiting situation from fiscal year 2022 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u200bThomas, who retired from the \u200dAir Force earlier \u200bthis year, said, &#8220;We\u2019re going to be starting 2023 in a tougher position than we started 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>New recruits raise their\u2063 hands as they take an oath outside the Times Square Military Recruiting Station in New York on Nov. 10,\u2063 2017. (Jewel Samad\/AFP\u200b via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>What&#8217;s Causing \u2062the\u2063 Recruiting \u200dChallenges?<\/h2>\n<p>In her emailed \u200cstatement to \u200dNTD News, Ms. Brown said the short-term struggle\u200d for\u2063 military recruiters is contending with a\u200b national labor shortage and competitive job \u2063market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u200bbattle for talent is intense,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms.\u2062 Brown also pointed \u2062to a general sense of unfamiliarity with the U.S. military\u200c among \u200bpotential recruits as another reason for\u200d the recruiting challenges \u200dthe branch\u2062 is facing.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force\u2062 Recruiting Service spokeswoman\u200d said that lack of familiarity with the military could become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-nba-is-investigating-after-g-league-player-jeremy-lin-says-he-was-called-coronavirus-on-court\/\" title=\"The NBA Is Investigating After G-League Player Jeremy Lin Says He Was Called \u2018Coronavirus\u2019 On Court\">long-term problem<\/a>. She said there is an overall declining \u200cinterest\u2063 in military service among today&#8217;s potential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>She also \u200csaid the new generation of potential military recruits also struggles with eligibility, with only about 23 percent of \u200bAmericans between the ages of 17 and 24\u2062 being able \u200bto serve without needing a waiver.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/woke-warfighters-gop-report-says-leftist-ideology-gender-insanity-weakening-americas-military-4876197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Some\u200b Republican lawmakers<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/woke-military-policies-to-blame-for-recruitment-crisis-servicemembers-say-4664277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active-duty \u200btroops<\/a> have\u200c put part\u200c of the blame for the \u2062military&#8217;s recruiting struggles \u2063on the perceived political slant of the military in recent years.<br \/>\n\u2064  \u200c<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In \u2062November of last year, \u200bthe Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation published \u2062its National\u200b Defense Survey results (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/07\/id933945-2022-survey-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>) for 2022, finding \u200djust\u2064 48 percent \u2063of respondents had &#8220;a\u200b great deal&#8221; of trust and confidence in the military, a 22-point drop\u2063 since 2018.
