(John \u2064Haughey\/The Epoch\u200c Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Public Health Emergency<\/h2>\n<p>Separately, the U.S. Department of\u2062 Health and Human Services (HHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2023\/09\/13\/hhs-secretary-xavier-becerra-declares-public-health-emergency-georgia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Wednesday declared<\/a> a public health emergency for Georgia due\u200c to the lingering impacts of the hurricane.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The \u200dpublic health emergency\u2014which follows President Joe Biden&#8217;s\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2023\/09\/07\/president-joseph-r-biden-jr-approves-georgia-disaster-declaration-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disaster declaration<\/a> for Georgia\u2014gives healthcare providers greater flexibility in meeting emergency needs of\u200b people covered by Medicare and\u2062 Medicaid health plans.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe will do everything in our power to assist Georgia officials\u2063 with responding to the health impacts of Hurricane Idalia,\u201d HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Idalia made landfall on Aug. 30\u200c with \u200d125 mph winds and 6-foot storm surge in \u2062Florida&#8217;s Big Bend region before moving north into Georgia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The storm caused an estimated $3-5 billion in private market\u200d insured losses, according to Moody&#8217;s Analytics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/private-market-insured-losses-hurricane-idalia-be-3-5-bln-moodys-rms-2023-09-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remove<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Individuals and businesses in a federally declared disaster area\u2062 that suffered uninsured or unreimbursed disaster-related losses can claim them on tax returns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Also,\u200d taxpayers who received certain qualified disaster relief payments\u200d can generally exclude those amounts from their\u200d gross income for tax purposes.<\/p>\n<h2>Inflation Emergency Declared In Georgia<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency due \u2064to high inflation and negative economic conditions \u200daffecting Georgians, with the governor suspending taxes\u200d on diesel and gasoline to\u200c provide relief. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/georgia-suspends-gas-tax-amid-emergency-declaration-over-inflation-5490237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remove<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. \u200cKemp\u2063 signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.georgia.gov\/executive-action\/executive-orders\/2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive \u200corder<\/a> \u200don Sept. 12, declaring a legal emergency over\u200d higher \u200dprices and\u200d suspending state taxes on diesel and gasoline starting on Sept. 13 and lasting through Oct. 12.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cost-of-fertilizer-up-as-much-as-500-in-some-areas\/\" title=\"Cost of Fertilizer Up as Much as 500% in Some Areas\">runaway federal spending<\/a>\u2064 to policies that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-suspends-gas-tax-amid-emergency-declaration-over-inflation\/\" title=\"Georgia suspends gas tax due to inflation emergency declaration.\">hamstring domestic energy production<\/a>, all Bidenomics has done is take more money out of the pockets of\u2064 the middle class,\u201d Mr. Kemp said in a statement, in which he blamed \u2064&#8221;policies coming \u2064out of Washington&#8221;\u2062 for the inflation-related hardship affecting people in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile high prices continue to hit family budgets, hardworking Georgians deserve real relief and that&#8217;s why I signed an executive order \u200btoday \u200cto deliver\u2062 it directly to them at the pump,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Georgia Gov. (AP Photo\/Alex Slitz, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While\u200b inflation has come down \u2064from the 9.1 percent peak in June 2022, many consumers are still reeling from persistently \u2063elevated price pressures of recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Calculations by Moody&#8217;s Analytics estimate that, due to high\u200b inflation, the typical household spent $709 \u200dmore \u200din a July than they did two years ago to buy the same goods \u2063and services.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kemp referred to the\u200b Moody&#8217;s Analytics calculations in his emergency declaration announcement, noting \u200cthat suspending the state excise tax will save Georgians 31.2 cents per gallon of \u200bgasoline and 35 cents per gallon of diesel.<\/p>\n<p>This is\u200b not \u2062the first time Mr. Kemp has suspended gas taxes. He\u2062 did\u2062 so in March 2022 and then signed seven extensions after that before ending it in December.<\/p>\n<p>His office said that, \u2062when the gas tax\u2063 was\u200c suspended for 10 months last time, Georgians saved roughly $1.7 billion at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>The average cost of regular gasoline in Georgia is currently $3.57 per gallon, up \u2064from $3.24 a year ago, according to AAA.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u200d Kemp<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IRS offers tax relief to Georgia residents and businesses affected by Hurricane Idalia.
