Gavin Newsom\u2064 announced on September 12 that more than $267 million\u2064 in grants is slated for distribution to 55 cities and counties to facilitate \u200darrests \u2063and \u2062help address such issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEnough with \u2063these\u2062 brazen \u200csmash-and-grabs. (John Fredricks\/The\u200b Epoch \u2064Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Orange County asked for approximately $15\u200b million\u2063 to fund its sheriff&#8217;s efforts to install surveillance cameras and to create a catalytic\u200d converter etching program\u2014where \u2064vehicle identification\u200c numbers are etched onto \u2062devices\u200b to discourage theft by making the items potentially trackable by investigators.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062Irvine Police\u200d Department requested more than $5 million to create a data collection center, driven by advanced technology, to help \u2063reduce not \u2062only retail but motor vehicle \u2063theft as well.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u200c Anaheim Police reported a 47 percent increase in retail theft\u200b crimes over the last 18 months and\u2064 requested more than $6 million to establish a task force and boost \u2062investigations by 500 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Fresno Police filed\u2063 a multi-agency proposal that\u2063 brings the department together with the Clovis Police and Fresno County Probation\u200c departments, and the \u2064Fresno County District Attorney&#8217;s Office to establish\u2064 what is being called the Fresno Metropolitan Area Organized Retail Task Force asking for more than $23 million in grants.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco \u2064Police would receive more than $15\u2063 million for \u2063\u201cblitz operations\u201d focused \u200bon \u2064retail crime in commercial areas including Union Square, investigations of stolen items being sold on the street, \u200cincreased training,\u2064 and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>District attorneys across the \u200bstate will also \u2062receive\u200b access to grant\u200c money, \u2062with\u200b those in\u200c 13 counties\u2014including Orange, Riverside, \u200cSacramento, and San Francisco\u2014currently recommended for funding of\u200c amounts\u200c up to approximately $2 \u200bmillion \u200deach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>A file photo of Orange County Sheriff&#8217;s\u2063 Department deputies in Yorba Linda, Calif., on Oct. 4, 2021.
