Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has \u2062found herself in \u200cthe midst of a\u200c congressional ethics controversy surrounding her marital \u200bstatus. While her office denies that she is married, her official filings tell a different \u2062story.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 a March 2023 filing, Ocasio-Cortez listed her fiance Riley Roberts as\u2062 her spouse. \u200cThis information is also reflected in\u200c a January 2023\u2063 form she filed.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, an \u2064August \u2062financial disclosure filing reveals that \u200cOcasio-Cortez took a trip to\u200d Italy with\u200d her spouse. The filing, which took place in August 2022, suggests that she was married at the time, as it discusses expenses related to her spouse.<\/p>\n<p>This discrepancy between official forms\u2063 and her office&#8217;s statements could potentially lead to accusations of\u200b hypocrisy. The Washington Free Beacon highlights that\u200c spouses of members of Congress are \u2062required \u2063to disclose financial information, something that Roberts has not done.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey are not \u2062legally married,\u201d Lauren Hitt,\u200b a representative \u200bof Ocasio-Cortez insisted. \u201cHouse Ethics\u2064 has commonly recognized the term\u2062 spouse to extend to long-term partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the House\u200c Ethics rulebook defines a spouse \u2063very precisely as \u201csomeone to whom you are \u200dlegally married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House Ethics Committee has stated that anyone who\u2063 falsifies disclosure forms could face a fine of\u2064 $50,000 or even a jail term \u200cof five years. Ocasio-Cortez is \u2063going \u200cto refer to Mr. Roberts as her spouse in the context of one kind of ethics disclosure, it would be logical and consistent for \u200bher to do so in the context of all ethics disclosures, including annual financial disclosures and periodic \u200ctransaction\u2062 reports,\u201d \u2064Hedtler-Gaudette continued.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kendra Arnold, executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, emphasizes that marriage requires\u200b disclosure.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf they were married \u2062then she would be required to disclose his finances on her 2022 financial disclosure. There is no exception to this rule,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is\u2064 not the first time Ocasio-Cortez\u2063 has \u2064faced ethical scrutiny.
