Mitt<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> Romney <\/span>Announces Retirement<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Sen.\u200b Mitt<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> Romney <\/span>will not seek reelection \u200din 2024,\u2064 capping\u200b a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-delegate-files-bill-to-abolish-state-run-liquor-stores\/\" title=\"Virginia Delegate Files Bill To Abolish State-Run Liquor Stores\">roller-coaster ride<\/a>\u2063 through Republican politics from the height of\u2062 his party&#8217;s 2012 presidential nomination to the depths of tribal warfare\u2063 in the age of Donald Trump, the Utah Republican said on \u2062Wednesday on \u2063social \u2062media.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Casting aside the hopes and \u2064appeals of\u200c colleagues including Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, the 76-year-old Utah Republican said \u2063he \u2063would\u2063 retire as \u2064a one-term senator when his term ends in early 2025, rather than seek another six years among a dwindling number of\u200d Republican moderates\u2062 in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>The son of a former\u2064 Michigan governor and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mitt-romney-to-retire-from-senate\/\" title=\"Mitt Romney to step down from Senate.\">auto industry\u2063 executive<\/a>, <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span> became a multimillionaire in the private equity\u200d business and served as governor\u2064 of Massachusetts before mounting \u200dan\u200d unsuccessful challenge\u200c against former president\u200c Barack Obama as the Republican\u2064 party presidential nominee in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>As a U.S.\u200d senator since 2019, he has been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-opens-criminal-case-against-ally-of-kremlin-critic-navalny\/\" title=\"Russia opens criminal case against ally of Kremlin critic Navalny\">outspoken critic<\/a> of Democratic president Joe Biden, though one willing to work with the White House and Democrats on issues including \u200dinfrastructure and gun\u2062 control.<\/p>\n<p>But within Republican circles, <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span> \u200b stood out as a rare Trump critic who voted to convict the former president at two Senate impeachment trials.<\/p>\n<p>With \u200dTrump dominating the 2024 Republican presidential field, \u2062 <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span> has faced powerful \u2062headwinds at home in solidly Republican Utah. A Deseret News poll in June \u2062showed 47 percent of Republicans saying\u2063 that\u2062 Trump best represented them, compared \u200bwith 39 percent who favored\u200d <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span>&#8216;s decision to retire effectively surrenders his Utah Senate seat to\u2063 a Republican successor who could\u2063 be more closely aligned with\u200b Trump \u200band the hardline conservative politics \u2062of the state&#8217;s other U.S. senator, \u200bMike Lee.<\/p>\n<h3>Potential Successors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Brad Wilson,\u200b the Utah state House speaker, has not declared his candidacy for <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span>&#8216;s seat. But he has\u200b raised $2.2 million through an exploratory committee, including more\u200b than $1 million from individual \u200ddonors,\u2064 and boasts a slew of endorsements from\u2063 state lawmakers.<\/li>\n<li>Riverton mayor\u200c Trent Staggs, a Trump supporter, has already declared his candidacy. Others, including\u200c former U.S. \u200crepresentative Jason\u2064 Chaffetz, are also seen as possible contenders for the Republican nomination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>McConnell, who has put a premium on Senate candidate quality in the 2024 election campaign, had urged \u200c <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span> \u2062 to\u200b seek reelection,\u200d describing him\u200d as &#8220;an incredibly effective\u2062 senator&#8221; to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> in August.<\/p>\n<p>But <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span> has shown little \u2063interest in backing away from his longstanding criticism of Trump as a\u200d candidate driven by &#8220;revenge and ego,&#8221; urging Republican megadonors and influencers\u2062 in a July op-ed to help narrow the 2024 presidential\u200c field \u200bin a bid to deny Trump the White House.<\/p>\n<p><span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Romney<\/span>, a fifth-generation member of\u200d the \u2062Church of Jesus\u2064 Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or Mormon church, narrowly avoided censure by the Utah Republican Party over\u200b his opposition to Trump in \u20642021.
