Sen. He said he did not answer the \u200b&#8221;unknown&#8221; call from the attorney general, but the next day,\u200d Michael Wynne, the lawyer\u200d for Nate Paul, contacted \u2063him and told \u200chim that Mr. Paxton was trying to \u200dreach him.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cammack told jurors he knew of Mr. Wynne through the Houston Rotary Club. Mr.\u2063 Wynne had recommended him to Mr.\u2063 Paxton, he said during questioning by prosecutor Rusty Hardin. He said he met with Mr. Wynne and Mr. Paul before meeting\u2063 with Mr.\u2062 Paxton.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. \u200dPaul showed you a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ag-ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-outside-lawyer-brandon-cammack-never-received-payment\/\" title=\"AG Ken Paxton Impeachment Trial: Lawyer Brandon Cammack Unpaid\">pretty convincing presentation \u2062utilizing<\/a> a computer, diving into the metadata, which at least convinced you that this \u2062probably happened \u200bor this \u2064might have happened, right?&#8221; asked defense lawyer Dan Cogdell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was convinced\u200b there could be something there,&#8221; Mr. Cammack responded. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t make a judgment either way, but it was\u200c a persuasive presentation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Four days later, Mr. Cammack said he met with Mr. Paxton to discuss the possibility \u200dof conducting the investigation, \u2063which Mr. Paxton&#8217;s team was refusing to work \u200don, according to his testimony.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cammack said\u200d that during \u200dhis meeting, Mr. Paxton told him, &#8220;I just \u2063want to know the truth, and\u2062 if something happened, \u200dthat would be an\u2062 injustice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Texas state \u2062Attorney \u2064General\u2062 Ken \u2063Paxton (C) sits with his attorneys Dan Cogdell \u200d(R) and Tony Buzbee (L)\u2064 during his impeachment trial\u2062 in the Senate Chamber at the \u2064Texas Capitol in Austin on \u200bSept. 5, 2023. (Juan Figueroa\/The Dallas Morning News via AP, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Days later, former staffer Ryan Vassar, who testified earlier in the trial, reached out to Mr. \u2063Cammack about a contract with the attorney general&#8217;s office to conduct the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>He said they had\u200b agreed on an hourly rate of $300, and he received the contract from Mr. Vassar, \u2064which he signed\u2062 and\u2063 returned.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cammack \u2062said he believed he had been hired and began working on \u2064the investigation into whether the federal warrant relating to the search of Mr. \u2063Paul&#8217;s home and business had been altered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never got any pushback until I got a cease and desist letter,&#8221; Mr. Cammack\u200c testified. &#8220;Again, [I] never got any pushback from anyone at\u2063 the attorney general&#8217;s office or the Travis County District Attorney&#8217;s Office\u200c or anything until I got a cease and desist\u200c letter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Days \u200dlater, Mr. Cammack met at a coffee shop\u2064 with Mr. Paxton and his\u200b new\u200b first\u2062 assistant, Brent \u200dWebster, who told him\u200d his \u2062contract was &#8220;not any good&#8221; and that he would have to &#8220;eat&#8221; his $14,000 fee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was offensive,&#8221; Mr. Cammack said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Legality of \u2063the Investigation<\/h2>\n<p>Over the \u200ccourse of the trial, prosecutors have tried to convince\u2063 the jurors that it would be unlawful to \u2062investigate a federal agent.<\/p>\n<p>However, the defense has argued\u200d that \u200dchallenging the legality of a search warrant is the normal course\u200d of being a prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, there was \u200can investigation into potential violations of the Texas Penal Code, which is \u200cwhat I&#8217;m\u2063 familiar with, so it would be in\u2062 my\u2064 wheelhouse,&#8221; \u200cMr. Cammack said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u200d Cogdell asked Mr. Cammack if there was anything &#8220;improper&#8221; about &#8220;investigating the validity of a search warrant simply because it\u200d is\u200b signed \u2064off by a federal magistrate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>More From Monday Afternoon\u2019s Testimony<\/h2>\n<p>House impeachment managers called their eighth witness, \u2062Travis County District\u2063 Attorney Margaret Moore (D), who said her office looked into Mr. Paul\u2019s \u2064complaints.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Moore described \u200bMr. Paul\u2019s allegations as \u201cbaseless\u201d and \u201cnot worthy of investigation,\u201d but \u200cshe forwarded the information to Mr. \u200bPaxton\u2019s former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/garland-on-if-illegal-border-crossing-should-still-be-a-crime-if-hell-prosecute-i-dont-know\/\" title=\"Garland On If Illegal Border Crossing Should Still Be A Crime, If He\u2019ll Prosecute: \u2018I Don\u2019t Know\u2019\">top law enforcement officer<\/a>,\u200b David Maxwell, due to \u201cMr. Paxton\u2019s personal interest\u201d in \u200dthe allegations.<\/p>\n<p>She told the jury she believed Mr. Maxwell would \u201cview this in the same way.\u201d\u2064 Mr. Maxwell gave his testimony on Sept. 8.<\/p>\n<p>House lawyer Rusty\u2063 Hardin asked Ms. Moore about the claims that she was responsible for\u200d hiring Mr. Cammack.
