The governor said, &#8220;<strong>We lost 143 children between 2017 and 2021; it is unacceptable, and it \u200ccalls for immediate and swift and bold\u2063 action.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The governor&#8217;s \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-mexico-governor-defends-emergency-gun-control-order-as-pushback-grows\/\" title=\"NM Governor defends gun control order amid growing pushback.\">orders prompted\u200c multiple lawsuits<\/a> from \u200dgun \u200brights organizations, \u2064calling the move unconstitutional. It&#8217;s unclear whether any arrests \u200dwere\u2064 made or \u2062citations were issued to anyone in this group of openly armed protesters.<\/p>\n<h2>Governor Compares Gun\u200c Rights to Abortion<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the interview continued, the CNN anchor questioned Ms. Lujan Grisham, an attorney, about where she\u2063 found the constitutional grounds to suspend gun carry rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Well, \u2064we&#8217;re \u2063going to see,<\/strong>&#8221; Ms. Lujan \u200bGrisham said. \u200d&#8221;<strong>Look, I wouldn&#8217;t do it if I didn&#8217;t think I had \u2064the right. \u200bI have the right.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The governor then \u200cappeared\u200b to pivot toward recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions involving abortion and gun rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Look, \u200dI&#8217;ve got \u200ca Supreme Court that says my personal bodily\u200b autonomy can \u200bbe restricted,<\/strong>&#8221; the governor said, in an apparent reference to a Supreme \u200bCourt decision last year \u2062finding that\u200b states could regulate abortion access. &#8220;<strong>And yet,<\/strong>&#8221; she\u2064 continued, &#8220;<strong>the NRA and other issues on the Second\u2064 Amendment keep \u2064getting broadened.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Last year,\u2064 in the case of the New York State\u200b Rifle &#038;\u200c Pistol Association\u2064 v. Bruen, \u200cthe U.S. Supreme \u2062Court determined that the Second Amendment right\u200b &#8220;to keep and \u200dbear arms&#8221;\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/supreme-court-strikes-down-new-yorks-unconstitutional-concealed-carry-gun-law-4553435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entails being able to carry \u2062those firearms in public for\u2063 self-defense<\/a>. The court further ruled that states\u2064 had to have clear, \u200cobjective criteria for \u2062permitting \u200dpeople \u2063to \u200dcarry their\u2064 firearms in public\u2064 rather than leaving the issue up to subjective permitting criteria and the judgment of state officials.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the interview\u2063 continued, Ms. Harlow \u200creturned to comparing abortion access and gun rights, asking how abortion opponents might use similar logic to restrict abortion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>to implement the ban to address the rising crime rates in the area.
