Bakeries that produce and sell bread will be exempt.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063agreement has\u200c received praise from the national organization Fight \u200cfor $15, which advocates for higher wages for \u200dfast-food workers. They co-sponsored the bill along\u2062 with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU \u2063California).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After years of organizing\u2062 [and] \u2063 pressure from workers, legislation was just introduced in California that gives us a seat at the table, power in the industry, and will raise fast food workers wages to\u200d $20\/hr,&#8221; the group <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fightfor15\/status\/1701318524407279677?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> on X,\u2062 formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>A McDonalds restaurant in Gorman, Calif., on April 18, 2022. A group called Save Local Restaurants, led by\u2062 the National Restaurant Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the International\u2062 Franchise Association, filed a lawsuit against California in December 2022 to stop the implementation of last\u200b year&#8217;s controversial Assembly Bill 257, The FAST Recovery Act.<\/p>\n<p>A Sacramento Superior Court judge \u200dgranted a preliminary injunction, halting the\u200d new law \u2062from taking effect in January. The FAST Recovery Act would have created a Fast Food\u200c Sector Council with the power to regulate the state&#8217;s fast-food restaurants and potentially raise the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $22\u200c an hour.<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the \u2062new agreement would repeal the\u2063 FAST \u2064Recovery Act but\u2064 incorporate some\u2063 of its provisions, including the creation of \u2064a nine-member Fast Food Council. (John Fredricks\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under the new bill, the council would have the authority to \u200cincrease the minimum wage each year by up\u200b to 3.5 percent\u200c or the percentage of increase in \u2063the U.S. consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, whichever is lower.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, as part of the agreement, Save Local Restaurants\u200b would be required to \u2064withdraw its\u200b ballot \u2062initiative\u2063 by January 1,\u200c 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;This agreement is in the best interest of \u2063workers, local franchise restaurant\u200b owners, and brands, and protects the franchise business model that has provided\u200d opportunities for \u2062thousands of Californians to become small-business owners,&#8221; \u2064said Matt Haller, CEO of \u2064the International Franchise Association.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California legislators are on the verge of approving AB 1228, which would increase the minimum wage for fast-food employees to $20 per hour.
