Nichols later died \u2062at a hospital,\u2063 and his death \u200cwas later reported as a homicide due\u200d to\u2063 blunt-force trauma,\u2063 according to a medical \u2064examiner\u2019s report reviewed by Nichols\u2019 family \u2063through their attorneys, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/former-memphis-police-officers-charged-death-tyre-nichols-face-federal-indictment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The five\u2062 officers were fired and subsequently charged with second-degree murder, aggravated \u200bassault, \u200cand other\u200c charges in a separate\u200b case \u200bin Tennessee. The \u200ddefendants pleaded not guilty in February to second-degree murder and additional charges \u200bin connection to \u2062Nichols\u2019 death.<\/p>\n<p>All five former officers were members\u200c of a \u200dso<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-former-memphis-police-officers-indicted-on-federal-charges-in-connection-to-tyre-nichols-death\/\" title=\"Five ex-Memphis cops charged in Tyre Nichols' death.\">-called crime-fighting unit<\/a> with the Memphis Police Department. \u200cAlthough the officers \u2064charged in Nichols\u2019 death were all black, and their special unit was disbanded, \u2063activists have taken to\u200b blaming \u201csystemic racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If convicted on\u200d the federal indictment, the former police officers\u200d could \u2063face up to life in prison for the\u2064 first two counts and 20\u200b years in prison for counts\u2063 three and four, according to the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for Nichols\u2019 family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/memphis-police-federal-charges-tyre-nichols-death-rcna104699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> NBC News in a\u200b statement that the federal indictment \u201cgives his \u2063family\u2063 hope as they continue to grieve his loss and inspire change in his honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal indictment comes after the\u200d Justice Department\u200d announced two months ago that the federal agency would launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-announces-investigation-into-andrew-brown-jr-shooting\/\" title=\"FBI Announces Investigation Into Andrew Brown Jr. Shooting\">civil rights investigation<\/a> into the Memphis \u200bPolice Department after more reports emerged of officers\u200b using excessive force.<\/p>\n<p><em>Daniel Chaitin contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal grand jury indicted five ex-Memphis cops for civil rights conspiracy and obstruction charges linked to Tyre Nichols&#8217; murder.
