You can\u2019t put \u2064a price tag on saving a life,\u201d Ocean City \u2062Police Chief Jay Prettyman said, according \u200dto <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/new-jerseys-ocean-city-taps-ai-gun-detection\/story?id=102960788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The report \u2064said that school \u200csuperintendent Scott McCartney\u2019s greatest \u2062fear is to\u2063 have a\u2064 school shooting take place in the schools he oversees.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI would do everything \u200bI could do to\u200b keep my own children safe, and in the role of superintendent, it\u2019s that much greater responsibility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/warning-ai-soon-issuing-parking-tickets-multi-city-pilot-program-proves-successful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">system<\/a>, which works in combination with humans who evaluate\u200d the system\u2019s alerts,\u2063 is also a deterrent, Prettyman added.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf \u2062we can put\u200c something in the place that we \u200bcan advertise about \u2014\u2063 that \u2063can scare \u200bpeople from coming to Ocean City and\u2064 coming to any of our schools, and we can \u2064push evil off to another day \u2014 that\u2019s what I think is \u200bour responsibility to \u200ddo for our kids every day,\u201d Prettyman said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 100 percent confident that we are going\u2062 to have such a fast response compared\u200c to not \u2062having this system,\u201d Prettyman \u200csaid,\u2063 adding that the system \u201cis \u200cgoing to \u200dincrease\u2062 the \u200dopportunity of\u2063 our\u200c officers \u200dto get into that building as quickly as \u2064possible and save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The system works through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/huge-win-school-safety-iowa-school-board-overwhelming-approves-arming-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">school\u2019s video cameras<\/a> to scan for objects that appear to be\u2063 guns. If a possible gun is detected, an image is sent\u200c to the\u2062 analysts at ZeroEyes, who are veterans\u2063 or former members of law enforcement. If they think\u2062 the threat is real, they notify school\u2062 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/top-ny-state-dem-reverses-commits-to-final-report-on-cuomo-investigation\/\" title=\"Top NY State Dem Reverses, Commits To \u2018Final Report\u2019 On Cuomo Investigation\">local law enforcement authorities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company \u200csays the entire process takes about 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFifteen times more people \u200cdie from gun violence in a given year than \u2064they do from fires in a building, but every \u200bbuilding\u2064 you walk into is\u2062 going to \u2063have a smoke detector fire suppression system,\u201d \u200cZeroEyes CEO and co-founder Michael \u200cLahiff said. \u201cIt\u2019s \u200bonly a matter of time. We\u2019re going to have proactive solutions out there for active \u200dshooters, mass\u2062 shootings,\u2062 gun violence. \u2062And \u200dZeroEyes is going\u2063 to set the bar for that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary for Intelligence at the Department of \u2063Homeland Security\u200c said the system cannot be perfect \u2063because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/big-tech-company-developing-artificial-intelligence-control-traffic-lights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> is never\u200c perfect.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf \u2062the data coming into the computer that\u2019s using artificial intelligence is flawed or incomplete, the judgments and the analysis created by the computer will be\u2063 flawed\u200d or incomplete as well,\u201d\u2062 he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf\u200c it works right, \u2064it can\u2062 help \u2062save lives. If it doesn\u2019t work \u2063right, if\u2062 it \u2064creates \u2064a lot of false \u200cpositives. It could actually be a distraction to response efforts\u200c and that can mean more lives lost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lahiff said the company has not yet sent out \u2063a false \u200balarm.\u200b He also noted that the system focuses on one \u200dthing and one thing only \u2014 objects shaped like guns.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>.\u201dWe\u2019re not \u200dwe\u2019re not collecting biometric data \u2064on people,\u201d Lahiff said. \u201cWe\u2019re not collecting faces or\u2063 names or anything like that. It\u2019s just looking for an object, looking for a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lahiff and Cohen both said \u2063an\u200c alert requires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-shares-solution-ending-school-shootings-says-take-5-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow-up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEven under the\u2064 best of circumstances, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/school-district-tests-ai-enabled-gun-detection-tech-to-thwart-potential-mass-shooters\/\" title=\"School district tests AI gun detection tech to stop mass shooters.\">artificial intelligence enabled early\u200d detection system<\/a> will only \u200csave\u200c lives when it\u2019s part of a multi-layered security\u200b capability,\u201d \u2062Cohen said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prettyman\u200d said he\u2063 will \u2064take every edge \u2063he can get.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t stop evil. You have to do the best \u200dyou can to prevent where it\u2019s going to happen and be prepared to respond once it does,\u201d he \u200dsaid.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Officials of <a href=\"https:\/\/zeroeyes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZeroEyes<\/a>, which lists the\u200d Air\u2062 Force as one of its satisfied customers, said they \u2063want to use \u200dthe information that already exists in a pro-active way.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u200d founded\u200b ZeroEyes,\u2062 to get an image of that gun and that shooter to the right people, so they\u2063 can \u200cget\u200d there\u2063 before shots fired\u2064 and know what they\u2019re getting into,\u201d co-founder Sam\u2062 Alaimo said, \u2062according to \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/new-jersey\/ai-may-be-the-future-of-preventing-school-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WPIX-TV<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s half\u2063 the\u2062 problem. \u2064First responders don\u2019t know\u200d what they\u2019re\u2062 getting\u200c into. They\u2064 get conflicting information in\u200d the fog\u2062 of \u2062war.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDepending\u200b on what source you get, be it the FBI \u200cor Secret Service or whatever, they \u200csay anywhere from two to 30 \u200cminutes the gun is \u2062exposed,\u201d \u200bAlaimo said. \u201cThat is a significant amount of time.
