The panel\u2019s vote, which declared the drug\u2019s oral formulations as ineffective, is anticipated to disrupt the\u200b market for \u2064over-the-counter (OTC) \u2062cold and allergy medications. <\/p>\n<p>According to national consumer sales\u200c reports, \u2062this \u2062is \u2063due to the fact \u200dthat most people prefer pills to nasal sprays.<\/p>\n<p>Phenylephrine has been said to relieve congestion by reducing \u2064the \u200cswelling of blood vessels in the \u2064nasal passages. It is found in drugs like Sudafed, \u2064Vicks, Nyquil, Sinex Nighttime Sinus Relief\u2062 and Benadryl Allergy Plus \u200cCongestion.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Americans \u200bhave been wasting billions a year on cold medicines like Sudafed &#038; Benadryl with the active ingredient phenylephrine, despite conclusive evidence they don&#8217;t work. The government may decide to start the process of taking \u2062phenylephrine off the market,\u200d which would compel drug companies to withdraw popular cough \u200dand cold remedies off store shelves \u2062and \u200breformulate those items.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis drug and this oral dose should\u200d have\u2063 been removed from \u2062the\u200c market a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ben-franklins-name-scrubbed-from-tacoma-city-park\/\" title=\"Ben Franklin\u2019s Name Scrubbed From Tacoma City Park\">long time ago<\/a>,\u201d said\u200b Jennifer Schwartzott, a patient representative from\u2064 New York. \u201cThe patient community requires and deserves medications \u200cthat treat their symptoms safely and effectively and\u200b I don\u2019t \u2063believe that this medication does.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>During\u200d the two-day advisory panel meeting, FDA\u200d scientists presented results from five\u2064 studies conducted over the past twenty \u2063years regarding the effectiveness of oral phenylephrine. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, the studies showed that\u200c they were not any more effective than placebo pills in treating patients with cold and allergy congestion.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, this prompted researchers at the University of\u2064 Florida to convene \u2064the two-day \u200dadvisory panel meeting and petition\u200b the FDA to remove phenylephrine \u200dproducts from shelves in retail stores.<\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Healthcare Products \u200bAssociation, a trade organization representing distributors \u2064of OTC drugs, announced Tuesday that it is \u201cdisappointed\u201d \u2062by the FDA\u2019s panel vote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe encourage FDA, \u200bbefore making any regulatory determination, to be \u200dmindful of the totality of \u2063the evidence supporting this\u200d long-standing\u2063 OTC ingredient, as well as the significantly negative unintended consequences associated with any potential\u2064 change\u201d to phenylephrine\u2019s \u200bregulatory\u200c status, Scott Melville, the organization\u2019s CEO, said \u200bin a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, this could result in a \u200csevere \u2062impact on retail\u200c pharmacy chains, which \u2062collect revenue from selling OTC cold and allergy pills. <\/p>\n<p>Well known pharmaceuticals, such as \u200bProcter &#038; Gamble, the \u200cmanufacturer of Nyquil, and the Johnson &#038; Johnson spin off Kenvue, which manufactures Tylenol and \u2062Benadryl.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the Florida researchers questioned the drug\u2019s effectiveness, however, the FDA allowed the items to stay on the market while\u200c waiting for more incoming research to be conducted.<\/p>\n<p>FDA staff \u2062concluded in briefing documents posted this week that oral\u200d formulations of phenylephrine do not work at regular or even higher \u2064doses.<\/p>\n<p>According to the FDA, only an extremely \u200bminimal amount of the medication actually relieves congestion in the nose, and if those \u2062who \u200b\u201cswear by it\u201d do not trust these claims then that is most\u200d likely due \u2064to a placebo effect. \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
