These charges are all connected to the tragic death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols during a \u200ctraffic stop\u2064 on January 7.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c officers&#8217; brutal treatment of Mr. \u200cNichols, which involved beating, pepper\u2062 spraying, and\u200b shocking him with a stun gun, sparked\u2062 national\u2062 outrage.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The \u2062country watched in horror as Tyre Nichols was kicked, punched, tased, and pepper sprayed, and we all heard Mr. Nichols \u200dcry out for his mother and say \u2062&#8217;I&#8217;m just trying to \u2063go home,'&#8221; Attorney \u200dGeneral Merrick Garland said \u2064Tuesday in the announcement of the indictments. \u200d&#8221;Officers who violate the civil rights of those they are sworn to \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/federal-charges-levied-against-5-former-memphis-police-officers-over-tyre-nichols-death\/\" title=\"5 ex-Memphis cops face federal charges for Tyre Nichols' death.\">protect\u200d undermine public safety<\/a>, which depends \u200bon the \u2063community&#8217;s trust in law enforcement. The investigation aims\u200c to \u200cdetermine\u2062 whether\u2063 there are\u200b systematic violations \u200bof the \u2062Constitution or federal\u2063 law, particularly regarding MPD&#8217;s use of force, discriminatory policing, and procedures involving stops, searches, and arrests.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;Tyre Nichols \u2064should be alive today,&#8221; said Assistant Attorney \u200dGeneral Kristen Clarke\u2063 of the Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights\u200b Division. &#8220;It is tragic\u200b to see\u2062 a life cut short at\u2064 29, with\u200c so many milestones\u2064 unmet, so \u2063many words unsaid, \u200cso much potential unfulfilled. These\u200d federal \u200bcharges reflect the Justice Department&#8217;s unwavering \u200ccommitment \u2062to protecting the constitutional and civil rights of every American \u2064and preserving the integrity of\u2063 the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<h2>Five\u200c Officers Indicted<\/h2>\n<p>The\u200c former detectives\u2014Emmitt Martin III, 31; \u2064Tadarrius Bean,\u200d 24; Demetrius Haley, 30; Desmond Mills, Jr., 33; and\u2063 Justin Smith, 28\u2014previously \u2063part of a controversial MPD SCORPION team, are accused of willfully depriving Mr. Nichols of his constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Count one alleges that the officers, aided \u2064and abetted \u200cby one another, assaulted\u2064 Mr. Nichols and failed to intervene in the unlawful \u2063assault, \u2063resulting in his bodily injury and death.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Count two accuses the officers of neglecting Mr. Nichols&#8217; severe\u200c medical needs, \u2062even when they were\u2062 aware of\u2062 them, which \u2062caused further injuries \u200dand ultimately led to his death.<\/p>\n<p>Count three states\u200b that \u200bthe detectives \u2063conspired to hide \u2062their unlawful use of force\u2062 by \u200domitting crucial \u2063information and providing misleading \u2064details\u2062 to their supervisor and other officers. Brown\/AFP \u200dvia Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Count\u200d four \u200calleges that the\u200c officers obstructed justice by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-throws-cold-water-on-dem-megadonor-sbfs-push-to-dismiss-charges\/\" title=\"Judge Throws Cold Water on Dem Megadonor SBF's Push To Dismiss Charges\">providing misleading information<\/a> about Mr. Nichols&#8217;\u2064 arrest to MPD officers.<\/p>\n<p>Convictions on counts one and two could result in life imprisonment, while counts three and \u2063four carry a maximum penalty of 20 years \u2063each.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>While these federal charges\u2063 are the\u2062 main\u200c focus of the Justice Department&#8217;s announcement, additional charges may arise from the DOJ&#8217;s ongoing investigation into the MPD&#8217;s patterns \u2062or\u200b practices and separate charges brought by \u2064the state of Tennessee against \u2064these \u200cofficers.<\/p>\n<h2>January Traffic\u200b Stop Goes Wrong<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this year,\u2062 Mr. Nichols\u2063 was pulled over in Memphis for\u2064 alleged reckless\u2064 driving. A confrontation ensued, leading Mr. Nichols to flee, as shown \u2064in\u2063 video footage released by\u200b the MPD in the days following his death. When officers apprehended him, they reportedly subjected \u200dhim to a beating that ultimately resulted in\u200c his death three days later.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Since then, his \u2062family has filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/tyre-nichols-family-sue-city-of-memphis-and-police-department-over-beating-death-5206432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$550 million lawsuit<\/a> against the city and the MPD. Renowned attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, described \u2063the incident as an\u200c &#8220;extrajudicial killing&#8221; \u200dduring \u2064a press\u200d conference in\u2063 April when\u2062 announcing the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Crump&#8217;s lawsuit accuses the city and police leadership of complicity and specifically criticizes the MPD&#8217;s SCORPION unit.
