(Photo by -\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>1:21 PM \u2064\u2013 Tuesday, September 12, 2023<\/p>\n<h2>A \u2063Storm of\u200b Devastation: Flash Floods Claim Thousands of Lives in Libya<\/h2>\n<p>A storm that\u200b hit Libya on Monday is believed to have killed up \u2063to 10,000 people due to disastrous flooding in the eastern part of the nation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to\u2064 humanitarian reports, more than \u200b2,000 people were killed in just one coastal city, and many more are still\u200d missing after a calamity \u200bbrought on by the Mediterranean storm\u200d \u201cDaniel\u201d worsened when two dams burst.<\/p>\n<p>The nation of\u2062 North Africa, which was already suffering\u2063 from years of strife, saw\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/estimated-10000-people-dead-after-libya-floods\/\" title=\"Around 10,000 lives lost due to Libya floods.\">entire neighborhoods destroyed<\/a>. Images \u2063showed the area completely destroyed by the floodwaters. Vehicles, masonry, and other debris littered the streets and\u200c whole buildings were washed away.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062ambulance and emergency services\u200c stated that the downpour looked to have \u2064caused the most damage in Derna, a \u200dcity where 2,300 people were reported dead and another 5,000 were missing.<\/p>\n<p>The health\u200d minister \u200din Libya\u2019s eastern government, Othman \u200dAbduljaleel, asserted that the situation was extremely \u201ccatastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe bodies are still lying on the ground in many parts. Hospitals are filled with bodies. And there are areas \u200cwe \u200dhave yet to \u200breach,\u201d he said, according to\u200c The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Aid organizations have \u200dcautioned that the death toll will likely increase considerably\u200c over the next \u2064several days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate death toll may be far higher,\u201d said \u2062Tamer Ramadan, during a video conference. Ramadan is a representative of Libya to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent \u200bSocieties.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe confirmed from\u200b our independent\u200d sources of information the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 persons, so far,\u201d he said, adding that this \u200bis not \u200da finalized figure. \u201cThe humanitarian needs are huge and much more beyond the abilities of the Libyan Red\u2063 Crescent and even\u200b beyond the abilities of the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Norwegian Refugee Council\u2019s Libya director, Dax Bennet Roque, stated that\u200b his staff\u2064 was reporting a \u201cdisastrous\u2063 situation\u201d after the floods struck some of the most underprivileged towns along the\u2063 coast.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cMany families \u200dhave lost all their belongings and search and rescue\u2064 workers are \u2064looking for\u2064 people missing. Tens of thousands of people are displaced with no prospect \u200cof going back home,\u201d he said. \u201cCommunities across Libya have\u200d endured years of conflict, \u2062poverty and displacement. The latest disaster will exacerbate the situation for these people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Two separate governments in the nation typically compete with\u2063 one another for control of the east and west parts of Libya. \u200bFollowing the murder of Moammar Gadhafi in 2011 after 40 years in power, both sides have received support\u200b from various militias and international\u200b countries that have fought for control of the oil-rich country.<\/p>\n<p>Following years \u200bof fighting, the nation\u2019s infrastructure and \u2062public services are in disarray.<\/p>\n<p>The worst-affected districts, located near the towns\u200c of Derna, Shahat and Dar Al Bayda,\u2063 were designated a \u201cdisaster zone\u201d on Monday by the Libyan Presidential Council.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>According to \u2063the council, \u201cbrotherly and friendly countries and international organizations to\u2063 provide assistance and support for the stricken\u200c areas and\u2064 maritime rescue efforts\u2062 to recover the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Richard B. Norland, the \u2063American ambassador to\u2062 Libya, declared \u2063in \u200ba statement that the \u200dUnited States had \u201cissued\u2062 an official declaration of humanitarian need\u201d in response \u2062to the flooding.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2064 are coordinating with U.N. partners and Libyan authorities to assess\u2062 how best to target official U.S. assistance,\u201d he\u200c said. \u201cLibyan Americans had been in contact\u200c with the \u200dembassy with offers of \u2062financial \u200bhelp.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Monday, the Libyan Health Ministry said that it\u2064 had rented a jet from African Airlines and loaded it with supplies and medication for distribution to the country\u2019s impacted towns in\u2063 the east.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
