A grand jury in Tennessee handed down a four-count indictment against\u2064 Emmitt Martin\u2064 III, 31, Tadarrius Bean, 24, Demetrius Haley, 30, Desmond\u2063 Mills Jr., 33, and Justin Smith, 28, on Tuesday. Nichols \u2063died from injuries suffered during a\u200b traffic stop that led to the \u2063officers using \u200dforce against him.<\/p>\n<h3>The Scorpion \u200dTeam and the Charges<\/h3>\n<p>The five officers were\u2064 part of the Memphis Police Department&#8217;s Scorpion team, a specialized crime unit\u2063 deployed to deter violence \u200bin the city&#8217;s most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/7-ways-democrats-would-raise-taxes-on-people-making-less-than-400000\/\" title=\"7 Ways Democrats Would Raise Taxes On People Making Less Than 0,000\">crime-ridden neighborhoods<\/a>. The unit \u2064was created 14 months before Nichols&#8217;s death and was disbanded after the charges\u200b against the officers were announced.<\/p>\n<p>All of the charges stem from violating Nichols&#8217;s civil rights. The first count alleges that the defendants aided and abetted one another in using excessive force \u2062and failing to intervene. The second count charges the officers\u2063 with deliberate indifference. The third count alleges the officers omitted and provided false and misleading information to their \u200bsuperiors and others to cover up their use of force.
