Many citizens are\u200d &#8220;largely uncomfortable&#8221; about the prospect of spending their old age in such facilities.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;More than four in 10 U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poor-rating-given-for-most-us-nursing-homes-quality-of-care-poll\/\" title=\"Most US nursing homes receive a 'poor' rating for quality of care, according to a recent poll.\">adults grade nursing homes negatively<\/a>\u200b for overall quality of care\u201436 percent give them a &#8216;D&#8217; (poor) and 6 percent an &#8216;F&#8217; (fail),&#8221; said a Sept. 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/opinion\/gallup\/510512\/americans-give-nursing-%20homes-grade-quality-care.aspx\">post by\u200b Gallup<\/a>. \u2062&#8221;Another 33 percent\u2064 grade\u2062 nursing homes as satisfactory, a &#8216;C&#8217;, \u2064while few rate \u200dthem positively with an excellent &#8216;A&#8217; (1 percent) or\u2063 good &#8216;B&#8217; (8 percent) grade. These ratings \u200daverage out to a D+ grade for nursing-home \u2063quality of care overall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently,\u2062 there are over 1.3 million individuals residing in around \u200b15,600 nursing homes across the United States.<\/p>\n<h3>The Need for Public Confidence<\/h3>\n<p>Gallup states, \u2062&#8221;Americans are largely uncomfortable with the thought of ever needing one (nursing home) in their later years or using one for\u200d family. The new poll makes it clear that nursing homes \u200dhave \u2064much work to do \u200bto instill more\u2063 public confidence in their facilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the poll, seven out of 10 respondents claim \u2064they would be &#8220;very&#8221; or &#8220;somewhat&#8221; uncomfortable about getting admitted\u2064 to a nursing home if they can no longer take care of themselves. Sixty-one percent felt the same way about admitting a relative or a family member.<\/p>\n<p>Quality of care was cited as the \u200dtop reason why respondents felt uncomfortable about living in nursing homes, with 70 percent citing it. The cost of nursing home care was the second biggest worry, followed by the potential mental and emotional negative impact of living in \u200csuch facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Some expressed fears about losing independence while others\u200d insisted they do not wish to die in a nursing home. Certain respondents were also concerned about their physical safety.<\/p>\n<p>Only one in five Americans said they are &#8220;somewhat&#8221; comfortable with\u2064 living \u200bin a nursing home or having their relative or family member\u200c in the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, more women than men raised concerns about quality and personal safety at nursing homes. Men were more likely to be worried about losing independence or dying there.<\/p>\n<p>Gallup reports, &#8220;Just one in four (26 percent) think nursing homes are safe \u2062places, while 41 percent think they \u2062are not.\u2063 In addition, more than four in 10 U.S. adults (42 percent) \u200bsay nursing homes\u2064 are \u2062not very or not at all effective in keeping residents safe from avoidable harms such as\u2064 infections, pressure wounds, and abuse and neglect. \u200bA similar percentage (44 percent)\u200c consider them at least somewhat effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The survey was conducted in July.<\/p>\n<h2>Distrust in Nursing Homes<\/h2>\n<p>Nursing homes came under increased scrutiny during the COVID-19 pandemic following a series of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, a data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/cuomos-order-to-place-covid-19-patients-in-nursing-homes-petrified-ny-nursing-home-admins-3741321\">disclosure<\/a> revealed that almost \u206315,000 nursing \u2062home residents in\u200c New York had died due to the COVID-19 virus after people who were recovering from it were released \u200binto nursing homes at the beginning of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>A\u200b Harvard University study from 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/more-than-16000-early-nursing-home-covid-19-deaths-likely-uncounted-study-3993269\">found<\/a> that delayed reporting requirements from the government caused as many as 16,623 COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes\u2063 to be omitted from the official count.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, several civil lawsuits have been filed on behalf of those who \u200bdied at nursing homes, some alleging that such facilities or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-gop-calls-for-investigation-into-top-state-officials-over-leak-of-fraudulent-trump-quotes\/\" title=\"Georgia GOP Calls For Investigation Into Top State Officials Over Leak Of Fraudulent Trump Quotes\">top state officials<\/a> are to blame for \u200bthe incidents.<\/p>\n<p>During \u2063the pandemic,\u200c the state&#8217;s\u200b Department of Health issued a directive that nursing homes could not deny admission or readmission to\u200b a resident just\u2063 on the basis of a suspected or confirmed \u2064diagnosis of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing homes\u2063 saw the directive \u2064to mean that they were required to take in COVID-positive residents. The lawsuits against nursing homes\u200d allege that even with \u2062the directive, the ultimate responsibility of caring for residents fell with \u2064these facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>State Failure in Ensuring Quality, Understaffing<\/h2>\n<p>The issue of poor \u2062nursing home quality was raised by the Department of Health and Human Services&#8217; (HHS) Office of the\u200c Inspector General (OIG) last year.<\/p>\n<p>States are responsible for ensuring the safety of people\u200d in nursing homes. The report (<a href=\"https:\/\/oig.hhs.gov\/oei\/reports\/OEI-06-19-00460.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) found that most states failed in this regard.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1812775\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/09\/alzheimers_awareness_90998188.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Over half of states\u201428 of 52\u2014failed to \u2063meet the same performance measure or measures \u200bin 3 or 4 consecutive years during FYs 2015\u20132018,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Medicare &#038; Medicaid Services (CMS) imposed a requirement on such failed states to submit corrective action plans. However, &#8220;10 percent of plans were missing from\u2062 CMS files and \u2063many others lacked substantive detail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According\u2063 to advocacy group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursinghomeabuse.org\/articles\/understaffing-nursing-homes\/\">Nursing\u2064 Home Abuse Justice<\/a>, understaffing at nursing homes &#8220;leads to poor quality care&#8221; and puts residents at risk.\u200b On the \u2063other hand, a \u2063&#8221;good ratio of staff to residents&#8221; boosts the \u2062quality of care,\u2062 it said citing studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nursing homes are staffed on a ratio of residents to \u200dstaff. The pandemic has further eroded trust, leaving many Americans uneasy about the idea of residing in nursing homes during their later years.
