Now a host of the &#8220;War Room&#8221; show, Mr. Bannon, was convicted \u200cof\u200d two\u2063 counts and was sentenced \u2062to four months behind bars, though \u200dhe has been free pending appeal.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta found that\u2062 Mr. Navarro didn\u2019t \u200bhave enough evidence to show President Trump had invoked executive privilege. The \u2062judge \u2063scheduled \u2063Navarro\u2019s \u2064sentencing for Jan. 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u200bis a landmark case that\u2019s bound for \u200cthe Supreme Court,\u201d Mr.\u200c Navarro said. Defense attorney John Rowley echoed his \u2064statement, saying \u201cthis\u200c case is not over \u200cby a long shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Navarro was convicted in Washington\u2019s federal courthouse of two \u200bmisdemeanor counts of contempt of Congress, both punishable \u200dby up to a year behind bars. The charges also carry fines of up\u200c to $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued at trial that the former \u2063Trump adviser acted as if\u2062 he \u2064were \u201cabove the law\u201d when he defied a subpoena for documents and a deposition from the House\u2064 Jan. 6 committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Navarro made a choice. He chose not abide \u200cby the congressional subpoena,\u201d prosecutor Elizabeth Aloi said. \u201cThe defendant chose allegiance to former \u200dPresident Donald Trump over compliance\u200c to the subpoena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A defense attorney countered that\u2064 Mr. Navarro didn\u2019t \u2063purposely ignore the House Jan. 6 Committee. Instead, according to the lawyer, Mr. Navarro \u200ctold staffers to\u2064 contact the former\u2062 president about what might\u200b be protected by\u200d executive privilege, something that didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Bryan Lanza, a\u2064 former Trump campaign adviser, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-66744592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the BBC<\/a> last week that the prosecution appeared \u200cto \u200cbe politically motivated.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It is\u200d not uncommon \u2062for Congress to hold former or serving members\u2064 of presidential\u200c administrations in contempt,&#8221; he \u200bsaid. &#8220;It is uncommon for the actual justice department to\u2064 go\u200b forward with these prosecutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Former Attorney\u2062 General Eric\u200c Holder speaks at the National Action\u2064 Network&#8217;s annual \u200dconvention \u2064in New York City \u200con\u200d April 3, 2019.
