The facts\u2014including our own\u200b capabilities\u2014should \u2063drive the issue, not\u200b foreign policy,&#8221; said\u200d Michael Wessel, a member of the U.S.-China Economic\u200d and Security Review Commission, in a post\u2062 on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Activists Lose Attempt to Halt Mining\u2064 Deposits<\/h2>\n<p>    \u200d   Thomas Benson, \u200da geologist at Lithium Americas Corporation, told the magazine that his company expects\u200d to begin mining the\u200d deposits \u200bin Nevada in \u20622026.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>The soil around\u2063 the deposit is both rich in the metal and easy to \u200cseparate.<\/p>\n<p>The mining process will remove the surrounding clay with water and then \u200dseparate\u2064 out the small \u2064lithium-bearing grains from larger minerals using\u200c a \u200dcentrifuge.<\/p>\n<p>The clay will then be leached in vats of sulfuric acid to\u2062 extract\u200c the precious mineral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they can extract the lithium in\u200d a very\u200d low-energy, intensive way \u2063or\u200c in a process that does not consume much acid, then this can be economically very significant,\u201d said Mr. Borst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. would have its own supply of lithium, and industries would be less scared about supply \u2062shortages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deposits are also mostly concentrated in one spot at the southern tip \u2064of the pass, thus limiting the environmental impacted by mining.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the lithium-extraction<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State University conducted the study, revealing the significant lithium deposit in the southwest US.
