However, Missouri\u2019s\u2063 newly enacted law \u200bregarding transgender care has created a new legal claim for patients who received these\u200c medications as \u2063minors,&#8221; the statement read. &#8220;This legal claim creates\u200b unsustainable liability for healthcare professionals and makes it untenable for us to continue to provide comprehensive transgender care for minor patients without subjecting the university and our providers \u2063to\u2062 an unacceptable level of liability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our medical practitioners have cared for these patients with skill and dedication. They have continually provided treatment in accordance with the standard \u200bof care and with\u200d informed consent of patients and their parents or guardians,&#8221; the statement \u2064continued.\u2064 &#8220;We are \u2064grateful\u2062 to our providers for their dedication \u200cto their \u2064patients \u200band their profession. We are committed to offering\u2062 our support to patients and \u2064their families\u2064 as they consider their\u200c options for future care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Washington University Transgender Center has been widely\u200d criticized since allegations were made by Jamie Reed,\u200b a former case manager at the Transgender \u200dCenter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Allegations and Investigation<\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Reed, in a February 2023 article with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Free \u200cPress<\/a>, claimed to have \u2062left\u2063 the\u2062 clinic because\u200d she could &#8220;no longer \u200cparticipate in what was happening there,&#8221; alleging that young patients and their parents were not being properly informed about life-altering risks of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones\u2014including sterility\u2014and that such drugs were being prescribed to patients regularly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Ms. Reed \u2064also alleged a \u200black of\u2062 formal protocols for treatments and claimed gender-altering prescriptions were given to children with\u200c mental issues, even\u2063 after parents revoked \u200bconsent.<\/p>\n<p>The claims prompted an eight-week internal review at the \u2064Washington University Transgender Center which ultimately found that allegations of\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/missouri-transgender-clinic-will-no-longer-prescribe-hormone-drugs-to-minors-amid-risk-of-fines\/\" title=\"Missouri Transgender Clinic Stops Hormone Drugs for Minors to Avoid Fines\">substandard care causing\u2062 adverse outcomes<\/a> for\u200d patients at the Center were &#8220;unsubstantiated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Missouri Attorney General\u200b Andrew Bailey gives a news interview in March 2023. (Courtesy of Missouri Attorney\u200c General&#8217;s Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Missouri Attorney General Launches Probe<\/h2>\n<p>However, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey also began investigating Ms. Reed&#8217;s claims at the center \u2064before widening that \u200bprobe into all \u2064pediatric transgender health care centers in \u200cthe state, including \u2062requesting records from a Planned Parenthood clinic about its policies\u2064 on gender-transitioning surgeries and treatments for minors.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/23\/health\/transgender-youth-st-louis-jamie-reed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times investigation<\/a> that included interviews\u200d with dozens of patients, parents, former employees, and local \u200bhealth providers, corroborated some of Ms. Reed&#8217;s claims.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The report found that the clinic often relied on external therapists, &#8220;some with little expertise in gender issues,&#8221; to evaluate young patients and whether or not they should receive hormone medications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Doctors prescribed hormones to patients who had obtained such approvals, even adolescents whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/drews-receipts-ron-desantis-gets-the-sarah-palin-treatment\/\" title=\"Drew's Receipts: Ron DeSantis Faces Sarah Palin Treatment\">medical histories raised red flags<\/a>.
