Gov. Dan Patrick \u2064opened Monday, \u2062saying\u200d that each side had about 14 1\/2 hours left and that deliberations could begin as soon as Thursday. In November 2022, more than 4.2 million Texans reelected the conservative attorney general to a third term.<br \/>\n\u2062<\/p>\n<h2>Witness Testifies Paxton Did Not \u2064Trust Law Enforcement Agencies<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Penley testified \u2062that, in\u2064 an\u2062 August 2020 \u2062meeting with Mr. Paul and his lawyer, Michael Wynne, he had\u2064 informed the real\u2062 estate investor that he would be closing the investigation. He said he had found no evidence of Mr. Paul&#8217;s\u200b claims of wrongdoing against him regarding the raid \u200bof his \u200chome in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Paxton was present for part of the meeting, according to Mr. Penley.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Penley told the jury that Mr. Paul and Mr. Wynne were &#8220;very unhappy&#8221; over the decision, and they &#8220;pushed back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Paul acted like we \u2064didn&#8217;t understand who the real boss was,&#8221; Mr. Penley said. &#8220;It\u200c wasn&#8217;t the attorney general. It was him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During that same meeting, Mr.\u2064 Penley said Mr. \u200bPaul &#8220;got very unhappy when Director Maxwell\u2062 called him out for leaking our investigation to \u200cthe media.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Penley further explained that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aclu-legal-director-retracts-tweet-criticizing-supreme-court-decision-after-learning-employer-filed-brief-in-support-of-plaintiffs\/\" title=\"ACLU Legal Director Retracts Tweet Criticizing Supreme Court Decision After Learning Employer Filed Brief In Support Of Plaintiffs\">law enforcement investigations<\/a> should be kept confidential in order not\u200b to &#8220;alert the target&#8221; \u2062or &#8220;smear people&#8217;s reputation unnecessarily.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He\u2064 said Mr. Paxton sided \u2063with Mr. Paul,\u2063 saying that it was within his &#8220;First Amendment right&#8221; to alert the media.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Penley also accused Mr.\u2064 Paxton\u200c of not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-ag-ken-paxton-impeachment-trial-could-wrap-up-by-weeks-end\/\" title=\"Texas AG Ken Paxton's impeachment trial may conclude by the end of the week.\">trusting law enforcement agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t know what it feels like to be the target of a corrupt law enforcement investigation,&#8221; Mr. Penley said Mr. Paxton \u2063told him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    Mr. Paxton has\u200b been fighting securities \u2064fraud\u200b charges since 2015, which he\u2064 has charged were &#8220;politically motivated.&#8221;<br \/>\n \u200d   \u200b<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Say It\u200c Again?&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The first week wrapped up with testimony from David Maxwell, a former Texas Ranger who was also the attorney general\u2019s top law enforcement\u2064 officer. Mr. Maxwell told the Senate\u2062 jury that\u200d he had warned\u200b Mr. \u2064Paxton to cut ties with Mr. Paul.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf \u200bhe didn\u2019t get \u200baway from this individual and\u200c stop doing what he was doing, he was going to get himself indicted,\u201d Mr. Maxwell testified\u200b on \u200cSept. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u200c Maxwell, who is recognized in the Texas Ranger Hall of \u2064Fame, led the 1993 federal takeover of David Koresh&#8217;s Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. The 51-day standoff ended in \u2063a bloody\u2064 siege that left 80\u2063 dead, including\u200b 25 children, two pregnant women, and four law\u200c enforcement agents.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Maxwell was fired by the attorney general after a group of staffers reported him to the FBI for possible\u200b criminal activity\u200d in September \u20642020. He later sued the\u200c attorney general for wrongful firing. He claims he was fired for \u200crefusing to investigate whether\u200d the\u2062 FBI had tampered with a search warrant used in the FBI\u2019s raid of Mr. Paul\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>During cross-examination, Mr. Maxwell \u201csuddenly\u201d had trouble hearing the questions asked by Dan Cogdell, one of the defense layers representing Mr. Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, so that\u2063 you and I are clear,\u2064 Ranger,\u201d Mr. Cogdell said. \u201cYou are a fellow that\u2019s taught folks how to testify, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it again?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton&#8217;s impeachment trial continued with testimony from Mark Penley, a former deputy attorney general for criminal justice.
