Dave Min Pleads No \u2064Contest \u2062to DUI Charge<\/a> \u200b- 8\/30\/2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Assembly candidate and\u200b Riverside City Councilwoman Clarissa Cervantes also was \u2063arrested in\u200d July\u200c for her second DUI\u2063 offense.<\/p>\n<p>The bill initially stalled after being introduced \u2062July \u206213, with the item \u2063\u201cheld at \u2064the desk,\u201d a \u2062phrase used to describe items that are still under consideration \u200bwhile some\u200c say such is \u200ca way to kill \u2064a bill \u200cwithout votes being \u200drecorded.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u2063 Essayli, a member\u2064 of the committee\u2014which is composed of 13 assemblymembers, and had eight members present when\u2064 the issue was discussed\u2014made a motion to immediately consider the measure Sept. 7 but\u2064 it did \u200cnot receive a second vote for consideration, even from fellow committee member and Republican Heath Flora\u2063 (R-Ripon).<\/p>\n<p>In\u200d a matter of 26 seconds, the issue was dismissed by the chair.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Assemblyman Bill Essayli speaks to the California Assembly\u200c Judiciary Committee \u200cin Sacramento, Calif., on March 21, 2023. \u200b(California State Assembly\/Screenshot via The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI find it \u2063to be\u200c very problematic with how \u200bcavalier we\u2019ve become with a serious crime like DUI, especially with \u2062elected officials who are supposed to be held to \u200ca \u200bhigher standard,\u201d\u2063 Mr. Essayli told The Epoch Times. \u201cThey\u2019re supposed to set an example \u2062for the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Flora did not \u2063respond to\u200c a\u200b request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of the resolution noted the need for responsible leadership and the \u200cimpact drunk driving has on families in California as reasons why the\u2063 measure should be approved.<\/p>\n<p>When \u2062announcing the resolution last summer, Mr. Essayli, a former\u200d prosecutor in Riverside County\u2062 wrote in a press\u200c release that over 1,000\u2064 Californians died last year as a result of \u2064drunk drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fought to keep\u200b our roads safe by prosecuting and convicting drunk drivers,\u201d Mr. Essayli said in\u2063 the press release. \u201cNow as a Member of the \u200cAssembly, I\u2062 am troubled by recent incidents of legislators and candidates drinking\u200b and driving. \u2062Public officials must be held to the highest standards given the public\u2063 trust placed in us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the resolution urging\u2062 lawmakers\u200d to act include the nonprofit\u2062 Mothers Against Drunk\u2063 Driving, better \u200cknown as \u2064MADD.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\u201cLimiting \u200caccess to state pool\u200d vehicles \u2026 for all \u2063drunk driving \u2064offenders will not only hold\u2063 elected officials accountable but will lead to much-needed change\u2064 in driving\u2063 behavior and decision-making that endangers California residents and visitors every day,\u201d Patricia Ri<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A resolution to bar drunk driving lawmakers from using government vehicles in Sacramento was rejected by the Assembly Rules Committee.
