(Photo \u2064by Darrian Traynor\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/james-meyers\">James\u200b Meyers<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>3:32 PM \u2013 Monday, September 11, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>The Biden administration announced on\u2064 Monday that they have agreed to a deal with\u200b Iran to\u200b swap prisoners and in exchange release \u200d$6 billion in frozen Iranian funds. <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>In the deal, Iran will release five American citizens detained in Iran and the \u2062U.S. will release five Iranian citizens that\u2062 are being held in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u2064 the deal will create a blanket waiver for international banks\u200b to transfer $6\u200b billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear \u200cof \u200cU.S. sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after Secretary\u200b of State Antony Blinken signed off on \u200bthe sanctions waivers last week, which was a month \u2062after U.S.\u200d and Iranian officials said\u2064 an agreement in principle was in\u200b place. <\/p>\n<p>However, Congress was\u2062 not \u2063informed of the waiver decision until Monday, according \u200bto\u200d the notification obtained by The\u200d Associated \u200bPress. <\/p>\n<p>The\u200d transfer\u2063 of the $6 billion was the key part of the deal, which saw four of\u2064 the five American detainees transferred from Iranian jails\u200d into house arrest last \u2062month. <\/p>\n<p>Several\u200b European countries stayed away from the deal, due to multiple U.S.\u2064 sanctions\u2063 on foreign banks that engage\u2063 in transactions aimed at benefiting Iran. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>According to Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at \u2064the Foundation for Defense of Democracies who focuses on Iranian \u2063security, he said that \u2063this new deal \u201cwill only feed\u200d Tehran\u2019s appetite to keep taking hostages.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAnd as \u2063the \u200bcase of the recently revealed Swedish diplomat illustrates, dual-nationals \u200dand foreign citizens \u2064are not the \u200donly\u200b targets. Tehran\u200b even intends to extort foreign government officials!\u201d Taleblu said. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Experts of the \u2062deal anticipate that the detainees will be released sometime next week. <\/p>\n<p>The American prisoners involved in the \u2064deal include Siamak Namazi, who\u2062 was detained in 2015 and was later\u2064 sentenced to\u200c 10\u2062 years \u200cin prison on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-agrees-to-prisoner-swap-deal-with-iran-releases-6b-in-frozen-iranian-funds\/\" title=\"Biden administration agrees to Iran prisoner swap, unfreezes B in funds.\">internationally criticized spying charges<\/a>. Emad Sharghi, a venture capitalist sentenced to 10 years, and Morad Tahbaz, who was arrested in 2018 and given a 10 year\u200c sentence, and the fourth\u2063 and fifth prisoners were not identified in the deal. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cTo facilitate their release, the United States has committed \u2064to release Iranian nationals currently held in the United States and to permit the \u200ctransfer of approximately \u2062$6\u2064 billion in restricted Iranian funds held in (South Korea) \u200dto restricted accounts in Qatar, where\u2062 the funds will be available only for humanitarian \u2064trade,\u201d Blinken wrote. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The sanctions waiver applies to banks and other financial institutions\u200d in South Korea, Germany, Ireland,\u2064 Qatar and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
