The problem is serious enough that all 50 states \u2062have asked \u2062Congress to \u200cinstitute a commission to study the problem of AI-generated CSAM, he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s definitely a\u200b correlation between the increase in AI-generated CSAM and when OpenAI\u2063 and DALL-E\u2064 and all these generative AI-type platforms launched,\u201d Mr. Litwin said.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI recently warned \u2063the public about the rise\u2062 of AI-generated sexual abuse materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalicious actors use content manipulation technologies \u2062and services to exploit photos and videos\u2014typically captured from an individual\u2019s social media account, open internet, or requested from the victim\u2014into sexually-themed images that appear true-to-life in \u200blikeness to a victim, then circulate them on \u2063social media, public forums, or\u200b pornographic websites,\u201d said the FBI \u2064in a recent\u200b statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Litwin said that \u2064to really protect children from online predators,\u2064 it \u200dis important for parents and guardians to clearly discuss the potential dangers of posting photos and \u2063talking\u2062 to strangers online.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>An artificial\u2062 intelligence (AI) logo blended with four fake Twitter accounts \u2062bearing\u2062 profile pictures\u200b apparently generated by artificial intelligence software taken in Helsinki, Finland, on \u200dJune 12, 2023. (Olivier Morin\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Dangers of Generative \u200bAI<\/h2>\n<p>Roo Powell, founder of Safe from Online Sex Abuse (<a href=\"https:\/\/sosatogether.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOSA<\/a>),\u200b told The Epoch Times that because predators can\u200b use the image of a fully-clothed child to create an explicit image using \u2063AI, it is best not to post any\u200b images of children online, even as toddlers, she said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt SOSA,\u200b we encourage parents not\u2063 to publicly share images or videos of their children in diapers \u200cor having \u200ba \u2062bath. Even\u200d though their \u200bgenitals may technically\u2064 be covered, perpetrators can save this content for their \u200down gratification, or can use AI to \u200dmake it explicit \u200dand then\u2064 share that \u2064widely,\u201d Ms. Powell said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>While some people \u2064say AI-generated\u2063 CSAM is \u200dnot as harmful as images depicting the sexual abuse of\u2062 real-life \u200cchildren, many believe it is worse.<\/p>\n<p>AI-generated CSAM\u2063 is produced much more quickly than conventional images, subsequently inundating law enforcement with even more abuse referrals,\u200d and experts \u2062in the \u2063AI and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-depth-parents-should-not-post-childrens-photos-online-warn-safety-experts\/\" title=\"Safety experts warn against parents posting children's photos online.\">online \u2064parental control space expect<\/a> the\u2064 problem to only get worse.<\/p>\n<p>In other cases, the \u2063AI-generated CSAM image\u200d could be created from a photo\u200b taken\u200b of a\u2063 real-life child\u2019s social media account,\u200c which is altered to be sexually explicit\u2063 and thus endangers those otherwise unvictimized children, as well as their parents.<\/p>\n<p>In worst-case scenarios, bad actors use images of real \u2063victims\u2062 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/anti-sex-trafficking-advocates-slam-twitter-on-heels-of-bombshell-lawsuit-from-teen-victim\/\" title=\"Anti-Sex Trafficking Advocates Slam Twitter On Heels Of Bombshell Lawsuit From Teen Victim\">child sexual abuse<\/a> as a base to\u200d create computer-generated images. They can use the original photograph as an initial input, which is then altered according to prompts.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, \u2064the photo\u2019s\u200b subject can be \u200cmade to look younger or older.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Using \u2064Good \u2063AI \u200cto Fight Bad AI<\/h2>\n<p>Prior \u200bto the wide availability of AI, editing and generating\u2062 images required skills and knowledge of \u2062image\u200d editing software programs.\u2063 However, AI has\u200c made it so\u2063 quick and easy that even amateur users can generate life-like images.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Netspark is leading the fight against AI-generated CSAM with CaseScan, its own AI-powered cyber safety tool,\u200d said Mr.\u2064 Litwin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely believe that to fight\u2063 the bad AI, it&#8217;s going to come through AI for good, and that&#8217;s where we&#8217;re focused,\u201d he\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement agencies must \u200cgo through massive amounts\u200c of images each day and are often unable to get through \u2062all of the CSAM reports\u2063 in a timely manner, said Mr. Litwin, but this is exactly where CaseScan is able to\u2064 assist investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Unless \u200bthe police departments are using AI-centered solutions,\u200c police\u200d spend an extensive amount of time \u200cassessing if the child in a photo is a fake AI-generated\u2062 or an \u200cactual sexual \u2064abuse \u2063victim. Even before\u200c AI-generated content, \u200dlaw enforcement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-could-abuse-apples-child-porn-detection-tool-experts-say\/\" title=\"China Could Abuse Apple\u2019s Child Porn Detection Tool, Experts Say\">child safety organizations<\/a>\u2062 were overwhelmed by the immense volume of CSAM reports.<\/p>\n<p>Under U.S. law, AI-generated CSAM is treated the\u2063 same as CSAM of real-life children, \u2062but\u200d Mr. Litwin said he does not know \u200bof \u2062any\u200d AI-generated CSAM case that has been prosecuted, so there is \u2062no precedent yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think today it&#8217;s hard to take to court, it&#8217;s hard to create\u200b robust cases.
