She has personally benefited from the\u2063 bold \u2062leadership \u2062of Gov. Ron DeSantis \u2063(R., Fla.), who took office in 2019 just as \u200dGauff was beginning her professional\u2063 tennis career.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gauff is a native of Delray\u200c Beach, aka &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/27\/sports\/tennis\/coco-gauff-us-open.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennis Beach<\/a>,&#8221; a close-knit oceanfront\u200d community \u200blocated about 50 miles north of Miami and less than 20 miles south of Mar-a-Lago. Her father, Corey Gauff, runs a sports bar in Delray Beach that serves as a gathering spot for fans to watch Coco play \u2063in tournaments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The black teen \u2064implicitly praised DeSantis for the\u200d role he \u2064played in her historic victory. &#8220;South Florida has\u200d helped \u200cme a lot\u200b to prepare\u200b for these moments,&#8221; Gauff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/sports\/article279112039.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> after defeating Belarusian rival Aryna\u200d Sabalenka in \u200bthe U.S. Open\u2062 final on Saturday.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2022\/results\/florida\/governor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won<\/a> Palm Beach County, \u2064a longtime Democratic stronghold that includes Delray Beach, by nearly 3 percentage points in\u200b 2022. \u2063The result was a shocking indicator of the governor&#8217;s popularity.
