However, he can only afford to lose four Republican votes if he hopes to pass \u200dall 12 appropriations bills before funding expires\u2064 \u2014 and he&#8217;s already facing attendance problems.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>House Republicans \u200dReturn to Messy Appropriations \u200dFight as Government \u2063Shutdown Looms<\/h3>\n<p>Three Republicans are either \u2062sidelined or heading toward a possible absence from the House. If they stay out of commission for much longer, McCarthy will find it\u2063 impossible to get the\u2062 votes necessary for \u200ca CR \u2014 a task already \u200cproving to be an uphill battle as \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rural-lawmakers-urge-swift-reauthorization-of-farm-bill-amid-revolt-from-gop-hard-liners\/\" title=\"Rural lawmakers push for quick farm bill reauthorization despite GOP hard-liners' revolt.\">hard-line conservatives threaten<\/a> to withhold their\u200c support unless Congress votes to rein in spending.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) announced \u2064in late May that he would be retiring from his House seat, citing his wife&#8217;s health as a \u2062reason for his early departure. He&#8217;s held the seat for 10 years and will step down on Friday. Republican Celeste Maloy will face Democrat Kathleen Riebe in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-state-senate-committee-releases-2022-redistricting-maps-barely-gerrymanders-or-head-fake\/\" title=\"Florida State Senate Committee Releases 2022 Redistricting Maps: 'Barely Gerrymanders' or 'Head Fake'?\">special general election<\/a> on Nov. 21.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) is\u200d recovering after \u200dundergoing hip surgery last month. He suffered the injury on his Roger Mills County farm. Lucas postponed his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/6-campus-hate-crimes-that-turned-out-to-be-hoaxes\/\" title=\"6 Campus \u2018Hate Crimes\u2019 That Turned Out To Be Hoaxes\">town hall meetings<\/a> on Aug. 4 and Aug.\u200b 25 due to his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>For non-health-related reasons, Rep. George Santos (R-NY) may be \u2062leaving the House, as well. He \u2063may\u2062 plead \u2063guilty to federal charges after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-three-republicans-are-making-kevin-mccarthys-life-even-tougher\/\" title=\"Three GOP members adding to Kevin McCarthy's challenges.\">court filings surfaced indicating<\/a> he is working \u200don\u200d reaching a plea deal with prosecutors. His status hearing has been delayed until Oct. 27, so it&#8217;s likely he could remain\u200d in Congress to vote for \u2063the CR.<\/p>\n<p>House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) may \u200dbe absent \u200cfrom \u2062House proceedings at times because he is in \u2063the midst of what he called an \u200baggressive chemotherapy course, according to Punchbowl News. \u200bHe announced on Aug. 29 that he was diagnosed with \u2064multiple\u2064 myeloma, a type of blood cancer. However, Scalise&#8217;s \u200boffice told the Washington Examiner that\u200d he will be attending House proceedings \u2063this week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hard-line conservatives \u2064are being vocal about their demands in exchange for votes.\u2062 House Freedom Caucus members are seeking a $200 billion spending cut, going against the debt ceiling compromise struck by McCarthy \u200band\u200d President Joe Biden. They also \u200cwant to cease funds to Ukraine, include funding for border\u200d security, and eliminate &#8220;woke&#8221; policies in the Pentagon and &#8220;weaponization&#8221; in the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p>The House has already struggled to pass its 12 appropriations bills, only \u200bpassing one on the floor \u2064before leaving for August recess. When \u200bthe \u200dHouse returns on Sept. 12, members will have\u2062 only 12 working days to pass the remaining appropriations \u200bbills.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier version of this story said Scalise would be absent from \u2062the House this week. Scalise&#8217;s office told the Washington Examiner he will be \u2064attending House proceedings this week.
