Robert Menendez (D.), it\u2019s \u200dthe lawyer\u200b he and his wife have \u2063retained as counsel.<\/h3>\n<p>Considered one of the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-please-pardon-jon-woods-a-victim-of-process-crimes-like-michael-flynn\/\" title=\"President Trump, Please Pardon Jon Woods, a Victim of Process Crimes Like Michael Flynn\">criminal defense attorneys<\/a> in the country,\u2062 David Schertler has represented all walks of elite life: an NFL player caught with a gun, military\u2062 officials involved in shady lobbying, a high-profile murder \u2064suspect. Now, Schertler\u200b represents Menendez&#8217;s campaign\u200b and his wife, the subjects of a multiyear\u200c Justice Department probe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you\u2019re in a situation\u200b such as Menendez, you\u2019re not necessarily going \u200bto a big firm,&#8221; one\u200d veteran \u2063Washington, D.C., \u2063attorney told the <em>Washington Free Beacon.<\/em> &#8220;Hiring Schertler means you\u2019re going to the mat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After years of investigations, reports surfaced last month that Menendez could\u200b soon face an <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/doj-weighs-charges-against-dem-senator-in-corruption-probe-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indictment<\/a> related to allegations that his wife took gifts from an Egyptian meat exporter \u200bin exchange for political favors. The looming indictment comes after years of corruption allegations against Menendez, who skated by with a mistrial in 2017 after the Justice Department indicted him on charges of bribery, fraud, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sidney-powell-is-an-american-legal-giant\/\" title=\"Sidney Powell Is an American Legal Giant\">making false statements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez\u2019s decision to retain Schertler signals \u2064that he\u2019s gearing up for a fight\u2014and getting nervous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You basically don\u2019t call him \u2062unless\u200b you\u2019re in deep shit,&#8221; said the veteran D.C.\u200d attorney, who represents politically connected clients.<\/p>\n<p>Schertler\u2019s services won\u2019t come cheap: Legal insiders believe he charges as much as $1,500\u2064 an hour. That price tag may explain why both Menendez and his wife sold\u200c up to $400,000 in gold bullion in April, precious metal holdings that Menendez <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/scandal-plagued-dem-senator-sold-up-to-400k-of-gold-amid-federal-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did\u2063 not disclose<\/a> until March. Financial disclosures show Menendez\u2019s campaign paid Schertler nearly $50,000 in February alone.<\/p>\n<p>Schertler, a former U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, bills himself as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/meet-the-high-profile-criminal-attorney-bob-menendez-has-tapped-for-ongoing-corruption-probe\/\" title=\"Bob Menendez has chosen a prominent criminal attorney for the ongoing corruption investigation.\">premiere white-collar criminal defense attorney<\/a>.&#8221; But the case \u200bthat made him\u200b famous involved a different type of\u200c collar altogether.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, Shelter defended Dylan\u200c Ward, one \u2064of the three men implicated in the\u200b grisly murder of Robert Wone. Wone and Ward were rumored to be romantically involved with Joseph Price,\u2064 one of the owners of the DuPont Circle townhouse where the 32-year-old attorney died.<\/p>\n<p>The Wone murder shocked the nation\u2019s\u200b capital and stumped the D.C. police department,\u200d who needed to\u200d bring in \u200dan expert consultant to investigate the \u200bshocking amount of sex toys found at the townhouse. In 2010, the <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtoncitypaper.com\/article\/224506\/the-secret-sex-toys-of-the-robert-wone-trial-how\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Washington City Paper<\/em><\/a>  \u2063 reported \u2062that authorities discovered at the townhouse &#8220;arm restraints, black hoods, collars, gags,&#8221; an electrocution device, and something called &#8220;the gates \u200cof \u2063hell,&#8221; so named for the &#8220;discomfort created&#8221; when attached\u2063 to a penis.<\/p>\n<p>Police determined Wone was &#8220;restrained, incapacitated \u2062and sexually assaulted&#8221;\u2063 prior to \u2063his \u2064murder,\u200b and alleged that \u2062the\u200b crime scene had\u200b been\u2062 tampered\u200b with. Schertler&#8217;s client and\u200c the other men found at the scene were charged\u200d with\u200b obstruction of justice\u200d and \u2062conspiracy, but not with the murder. Wone\u2019s killer was never found.<\/p>\n<p>The case put Schertler and his cunning legal skills on the map, and helped him rise to become one of the nation\u2019s most sought-after defense attorneys. He has taken on a\u2062 number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nancy-pelosis-husband-finally-charged-with-dui\/\" title=\"Nancy Pelosi\u2019s Husband Finally Charged With DUI\">high-profile clients<\/a> since.\u200c Then-Indianapolis Colts safety Joe \u2062Lefeged, \u200bhired Schertler in 2013 after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/lefeged-of-indianapolis-colts-ordered-released-after-gun-charge\/2013\/07\/02\/c7325942-e244-11e2-aef3-339619eab080_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> \u200cfor fleeing the\u200d police under\u200c the influence of drugs with a loaded \u2064handgun in his car.<\/p>\n<p>Schertler secured \u2064Lefeged\u2019s freedom immediately after the \u200barrest, even as prosecutors pleaded\u2062 for the judge to deny him bail. Lefeged was signed\u2064 to the Jacksonville\u200b Jaguars less than\u200d six months after his release.<\/p>\n<p>Five years later, Schertler represented disgraced currency trader\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-forex-trial-idUSKCN1MZ2U9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Ashton<\/a> after he was accused of rigging the \u200bmultitrillion-dollar foreign \u2062exchange market. Ashton was found not guilty in the fall of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Schertler\u200d recently represented Marine Gen. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/3837420-doj-closes-investigation-into-retired-general-accused-of-secretly-lobbying-for-qatar\/\">John\u200d Allen<\/a>, who was investigated by the Department of Justice \u200cfor \u200bpotentially illegally \u200clobbying on behalf of \u2064Qatar amid its faltering diplomatic relations with\u2063 neighboring countries. According to an FBI affidavit, Allen traveled to Qatar \u2064to meet with top officials and promoted Qatari interests before the White House and Congress, in defiance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-facilitated-deal-for-democratic-consultants-now-under-federal-investigation\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Facilitated Deal for Democratic Consultants Now Under Federal Investigation\">foreign lobbying laws<\/a>.
