You have caused our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-dakota-man-gets-five-years-for-running-over-and-killing-teen-with-his-car-over-concerns-he-was-a-republican-extremist\/\" title=\"North Dakota man sentenced to five years for fatally running over teen due to suspected political extremism.\">family\u2064 endless pain<\/a>, heartache, sleepless \u2064nights.\u2063 Our days, months, and\u200b years will never be the same because of your selfishness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shannon Brandt of\u200b Glenfield,\u2062 North Dakota, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May after fatally running over Cayler Ellingson with his 2003 Ford Explorer on\u200d September 18, 2022, in McHenry, \u200cNorth Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>A state district court judge reportedly gave Brandt the sentencing with nearly a year of credit for \u2064time served under house arrest, including \u2064three years&#8217; supervised probation and a yearlong suspension of\u2063 his driver&#8217;s license. The maximum penalty for such charges is 10 years in prison, a\u2064 $20,000 fine, or both, according to\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-dakota-hit-run-argument-death-sentence-2a81fc37edab4ed083b3eab26dc199f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The\u200b Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy Surrounding \u200dthe \u2063Case<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/north-dakota-man-pleads-guilty-to-manslaughter-after-hitting-teen-he-feared-was-linked-to-republican-extremist-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case<\/a> quickly became controversial after an affidavit from police suggested that Brandt had run down\u200c Ellingson following a political disagreement, \u2063a claim investigators later backtracked on due to lack\u200d of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Foster County State Attorney\u2064 Kara Brinster said Brandt had been drinking and arguing\u2062 with Ellingson before the incident.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;He was threatening me with something to\u200c have to do \u200bwith \u2014 something with an extremist\u2062 Republican group. And then he made a \u2062phone call. He made a phone call saying, &#8216;I thought\u2064 he was Republican (background noise) or \u2062something. You&#8217;re going \u2063have to come \u200chere and handle him.&#8217; I got scared \u200dto death. I didn&#8217;t know what to do,&#8221; a transcript of Brandt&#8217;s \u200c911 \u2063call says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Brandt\u2062 claimed that\u200b he accidentally hit \u2063the teen while trying to get away from him during a crowded event in McHenry.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/an-autopsy-report-on-dead-bodybuilders\/\" title=\"An Autopsy Report on Dead Bodybuilders\">autopsy report revealed<\/a> that \u2062Ellingson&#8217;s fatal injuries were not caused \u2064by being\u2064 struck by Brandt&#8217;s vehicle but by being run over once\u200b he was \u2064on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities initially charged Brandt with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-evidence-republican-teen-killed-in-north-dakota-was-extremist-highway-patrol-captain\/\" title=\"No Evidence Republican Teen Killed in North Dakota Was Extremist: Highway Patrol Captain\">criminal vehicular homicide<\/a>,\u200b but\u2063 Forster County State&#8217;s Attorney Kara Brinster later reduced\u200d the charges to manslaughter, to which Brandt pleaded guilty \u2064on May 18.<\/p>\n<h3>Apology and Sentencing<\/h3>\n<p>Before the judge sentenced Brandt, he\u200b addressed the \u2063court and apologized to everyone impacted by his actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here to take responsibility for the role I played in this tragedy,&#8221; Brandt said. &#8220;I&#8217;m very sorry to the Ellingson family, my family, and anybody else that has been\u2064 affected by my actions. I have always enjoyed seeing the Ellingsons and\u2064 would never\u200b have intentionally caused harm to any of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Defense attorney Mark Friese\u200d stated that Brandt is relieved to have\u2064 finally been able to offer his apology and allow the Ellingson family to move forward.
