The incident occurred following the \u2064man&#8217;s \u2062expression of concern about the teenager&#8217;s alleged connection to a &#8220;Republican extremist&#8221; group.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Shannon, you \u2064took a piece of\u200d our family that&#8217;s not replaceable,&#8221; said Cayler Ellingson&#8217;s mother, Sheri. &#8220;When you chose to \u200dtake Cayler&#8217;s life and happiness, you took ours too. You\u200b have caused our family endless pain, heartache, sleepless nights. Our days, months, and years will never be the\u200c same because of\u200c your selfishness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shannon Brandt of Glenfield,\u2063 North Dakota, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-president-trump-to-pardon-gen-michael-flynn-per-report\/\" title=\"BREAKING: President Trump to Pardon Gen. Michael Flynn, Per Report\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to manslaughter in May after fatally running over Cayler Ellingson with his 2003 Ford Explorer on \u200bSeptember 18, 2022, in McHenry, North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>A state district court judge reportedly gave Brandt\u2064 the sentencing with nearly a year of credit for time served under house arrest, \u2062including three years&#8217; supervised probation and a yearlong suspension of his driver&#8217;s \u2062license. The maximum penalty for such charges is 10 years in prison,\u200c a $20,000 fine, or both, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-dakota-hit-run-argument-death-sentence-2a81fc37edab4ed083b3eab26dc199f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy Surrounding the\u200c Case<\/h3>\n<p>The case quickly became controversial after an affidavit from police suggested that Brandt had run down Ellingson following a \u200cpolitical\u200b disagreement, a claim investigators later backtracked on due to lack of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Foster County State Attorney Kara Brinster said Brandt had been drinking\u200b and \u2064arguing with Ellingson before the incident.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;He was threatening me with something\u200d to have\u200b to do with \u2014 \u2064something\u2064 with an extremist Republican group.\u2062 And then he made a \u2062phone call. He\u200b made a phone call saying, &#8216;I thought he was Republican (background\u200b noise) or something. You&#8217;re going have to come here \u200band handle him.&#8217; I got scared to death. I didn&#8217;t know what to do,&#8221; a transcript of Brandt&#8217;s \u2064911 call says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Brandt \u200dclaimed \u200bthat he\u200d accidentally hit the teen while trying to get away from him\u200b during a crowded event in\u2062 McHenry.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/an-autopsy-report-on-dead-bodybuilders\/\" title=\"An Autopsy Report on Dead Bodybuilders\">autopsy report revealed<\/a> that Ellingson&#8217;s fatal injuries\u200c were not \u2063caused by being struck by Brandt&#8217;s vehicle, but rather by being run over once he was on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities initially charged Brandt with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-dakota-man-gets-five-years-for-hitting-teen-with-his-car-over-concerns-he-was-a-republican-extremist\/\" title=\"North Dakota man sentenced to five years for hitting teen with car due to suspicions of being a 'Republican extremist'.\">criminal vehicular\u2063 homicide<\/a>,\u200d but Forster County State&#8217;s Attorney Kara Brinster later reduced the charges to manslaughter, to which Brandt pleaded guilty on May 18.<\/p>\n<h3>Apology and Sentencing<\/h3>\n<p>Before\u2064 the judge sentenced Brandt, he addressed the court and apologized \u2062to everyone \u200cimpacted by his actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here to take responsibility for the role I played in this\u200d tragedy,&#8221; Brandt said. &#8220;I&#8217;m very sorry to\u200b the Ellingson family, my family, and anybody else that has been affected by my actions. I have always enjoyed seeing the Ellingsons and would never have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-cosby-found-liable-for-sexual-battery\/\" title=\"Bill Cosby Found Liable For Sexual Battery\">intentionally caused harm<\/a> to any of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Defense attorney Mark Friese stated that Brandt is relieved to have finally been able to offer\u200c his apology\u2064 and allow the Ellingson family to \u2062move forward. \u200cHe also mentioned that \u200dfalse information exacerbated \u200cthe situation and people used the tragedy to advance their political platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Brandt reportedly was diagnosed with autism, which \u200dFoster County Judge Bradley Cruff acknowledged during the sentencing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;You didn&#8217;t intentionally run him over,&#8221; Cruff said. &#8220;I \u200dacknowledge that. I understand what the experts in this case are saying about how your mind works. And you didn&#8217;t \u2062intentionally kill Cayler.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;But he did die,&#8221; \u200bCruff added. \u2064&#8221;And that&#8217;s a \u2062result of your alcohol \u2063consumption.
