She previously argued the \u2063legislation doesn&#8217;t prioritize a\u200b parent&#8217;s gender-affirming over other judicial criteria \u200bthat determine custody disputes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;If you have a child going through that \u2062system, a judge has discretion, like they do \u2064looking at the totality of\u2064 circumstances related\u200c to the health, \u200bsafety, \u200dand\u200d welfare of a child, to consider different factors,&#8221; the \u2063Assemblywoman <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/california-proposed-bill-gender-affirming-children\/13377700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> ABC7\u200c in June after the bill \u2063made its way through California Legislature.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Controversial Senate Hearing<\/h2>\n<p>At the Senate Judiciary Committee \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.ca.gov\/media\/senate-judiciary-committee-20230613\/video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hearing<\/a>, Ms. Wilson said the\u2062 bill was intended \u2064to address &#8220;parents antagonistic \u2064to their child\u2019s gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Scott Wilk, a Republican, said there have been many policies introduced to\u200b protect children during his 11 years in \u2062the state legislature. But now, \u200che said, it&#8217;s time to start protecting parents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, we have put government\u2062 bureaucrats \u200dbetween parents, children, \u200dand \u2063doctors when it comes to medical care. And now, we have this, where if a parent does not\u200c support the ideology of the \u2064government, [children] are going to be taken away from the home,\u201d Mr. Wilk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.ca.gov\/media\/senate-judiciary-committee-20230613\/video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2062 love your children, you\u200b need to flee\u2062 California.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Divided\u2062 Senate Vote<\/h2>\n<p>On \u200cSept. 6, \u200cthe bill cleared the state Senate in a near-party-line <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billVotesClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote<\/a>, 30-9. Democrats argue that the legislation\u200d would help to protect the well-being of LGBTQ+\u2063 children whose parents are\u200d going \u200bthrough a divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Every Republican in the state Senate voted against the bill, with \u2063state Sen. Kelly Seyarto, who represents Murrieta in Southern \u200cCalifornia, arguing that lawmakers were interfering too much with how parents choose to raise their children.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat governor\u2062 now has until Oct. 15 to \u200deither sign\u2062 the bill into law or veto it.<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utter-madness-elon-musk-reacts-to-californias-proposed-gender-affirming-law\/\" title=\"Elon Musk calls California's proposed gender affirming law \"utter madness.\"\">parental rights groups warned<\/a> the bill would leave parents involved in a child custody battle\u2063 with no choice but to\u200b consent\u2062 to recommendations of gender \u2064change for their child at any age, for any gender identity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cNewsom needs to \u2062veto it because \u200bif he doesn\u2019t, he is aligning with breaking up families.
