That gives\u200c it a different dimension,\u201d said Harley Shaiken,\u200c a\u200c labor professor at the University of California, \u2064Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2064a Facebook \u200bLive appearance on Friday,\u2064 Fain spoke with a trash can labeled \u200d\u201cBig Three Proposals\u201d behind him. \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>In response to Fain\u2019s hard-nosed comments, the automakers have been more public-facing with contract offers, said \u200bBrian Rothenberg, a former spokesman for the union. <\/p>\n<p>Auto executives \u200dhave repeatedly stressed the companies\u2063 must\u200c reduce labor costs as they overhaul U.S. factories to build electric vehicles to match\u200d Tesla and other non-union manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>This week,\u2063 the UAW released a video in an \u2064effort to save a shuttered Stellantis plant in the northern Illinois \u200btown of \u2064Belvidere.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled \u201cJustice for Belvidere,\u201d\u2064 the video chronicled the\u200c frustration and anger union members have felt since the Jeep assembly plant was idled in February. It included music and sweeping\u2062 shots of the picturesque town.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis declined to comment on the video and on Friday offered U.S. hourly workers a 14.5% wage \u2064hike over four years, which the UAW rebuffed, saying it would not make up\u2063 for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Some hourly workers in Belvidere\u200d have accepted relocation packages to work at facilities in neighboring states, but most hope there\u2019s still a future for the 50-year-old plant once the talks are settled. <\/p>\n<p>As the \u2062clock ticks down toward the Sept. 14 contract expiration, the union\u2019s deadline for the talks, local president Matt Frantzen said he\u2019s already \u200bbegun assigning strike duties.<\/p>\n<p>The UAW has demanded wage hikes of 46%, an end to the tiered wage system that pays new hires less than veterans, reinstatement of cost-of-living adjustments and restoration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-members-authorize-strike-at-detroit-three-automakers\/\" title=\"UAW members approve strike at Detroit Three automakers.\">defined-benefit\u2063 pension plans<\/a> for\u2064 new hires, which the automakers ended in \u200d2007. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>  (Reporting by Bianca Flowers in Chicago; and Leslie Adler)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/uncategorized\/uaw-union-embraces-social\/attachment\/file-photo-united-auto-workers-president-shawn-fain-greets-uaw\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>83-year-old Pelosi runs for\u200c reelection to Make America \u2062San Francisco.
