Version: 4.0.47--><h2>Did special \u2063counsel Jack Smith\u2064 use underhanded pressure tactics in his\u200b pursuit of former President Donald Trump?<\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s the allegation being made by one of the lawyers involved in the case \u2014 and the chairman of \u200cthe \u2064House Judiciary Committee wants\u200d answers.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Smith mailed Thursday, Ohio GOP Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jim-jordan-subpoenas-citibank-alleged-back-channel-sharing-customer-data-fbi-jan-6-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Jordan<\/a>, who leads\u200b the Judiciary Committee, \u2063demanded evidence relating \u200cto assertions one of his senior prosecutors \u201callegedly improperly pressured Stanley Woodward, a\u200d lawyer representing a defendant indicted by you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accusations of impropriety stem from a meeting \u2062between Jay Bratt and Woodward \u2014 who\u200c represents one of the defendants in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, Walt Nauta \u2014 in which Bratt supposedly pressured Woodward \u201cby implying that the Administration would look more favorably\u2064 on Mr.\u200c Woodward\u2019s candidacy for a \u200djudgeship if \u2063Mr.\u200b Woodward\u2019s\u200c client cooperated with the Office of the \u200dSpecial Counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan\u2064 gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/special-counsel-jack-smith-whines-trumps-daily-social-media-posts-new-court-filing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith<\/a> until Sept. 21 to \u200bprovide documents related to the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn November \u20632022, when your\u200d prosecutors \u2064were \u200dtrying to secure the cooperation of Walt Nauta\u2014who is alleged to have \u2018move[d] boxes of documents\u2019 at\u2064 Mar-a-Lago\u2014prosecutors, including\u200c Mr. Bratt, summoned Mr. \u200cWoodward to a meeting at the \u2064Department\u2019s\u200c headquarters for \u2018an urgent matter that \u200cthey were reluctant to discuss over the phone,&#8217;\u201d Jordan said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-09\/2023-09-07-jdj-to-smith-re-woodward-allegations_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>,\u2064 obtained\u2062 by\u2062 Just the News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Mr. Woodward\u2063 arrived, Mr. Bratt threatened him that\u2062 Mr. Nauta\u2062 should cooperate \u2018because he had given\u200b potentially conflicting testimony that could result in a\u2064 false statement.\u2019 \u200cMr. \u200dBratt \u2062commented\u200b that he did not take Mr. Woodward as \u2062a \u2063\u2018Trump guy\u2019 and indicated\u200d that\u2062 he \u2064was confident that Mr. Woodward \u2063\u2018would \u200ddo the right thing,&#8217;\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>Bratt then allegedly \u201creferenced Mr. Woodward\u2019s pending application for \u2062a judgeship on the\u2063 D.C.\u2062 superior court, \u2063implying that the Biden Administration would perceive Mr. Woodward\u2019s application more\u2063 favorably if\u2063 Mr. Nauta was a \u2062cooperating witness for the\u200d Special\u2062 Counsel against President \u2062Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodward\u2063 then broke off communications with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-appeals-court-rules-dojs-attempt-block-trump-deposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department \u200dof Justice<\/a>, saying there would be no further discussions unless Nauta was charged or given an immunity deal.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s office didn\u2019t stop there, Jordan\u2019s letter alleges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Mr. Woodward declined to give \u2062in to\u200b Mr.\u2062 Bratt\u2019s\u200b intimidation\u200b and coercion, Mr. Bratt once again sought to induce Mr. Nauta\u2019s \u2062cooperation by attacking Mr. Woodward\u2019s representation. On \u2063August 2, 2023, Mr. Bratt filed a motion in Mr. Nauta\u2019s case raising alleged conflicts of interests presented by Mr. Woodward\u2019s representation\u2063 of two other witnesses \u201cwho could be called to testify at\u200c a trial in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-gop-questions-whether-biden-admin-suppressed-national-archive-statements-in-classified-documents-case\/\" title=\"House GOP Questions Whether Biden Admin Suppressed National Archive Statements in Classified Documents Case\">case involving classified documents<\/a> at \u200bMar-a-Lago,&#8217;\u201d the letter read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2062 further suggested\u2063 that the \u2062court should \u2018procure independent counsel\u2019 to be present at the hearing \u2018to advise Mr. Woodward\u2019s\u2063 clients\u200d regarding the potential conflicts.\u2019 Mr. Woodward\u2019s reply brief stated that Mr. Bratt\u2019s intimidation \u200bthreats were merely \u2018an attempt to diminish \u2063the Court\u2019s authority over\u2062 the proceedings in this case\u200b and \u2063to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congressional-probe-launched-jack-smith-given-deadline-to-turn-over-materials\/\" title=\"Congressional investigation initiated, Jack Smith required to submit materials by deadline.\">undermine attorney-client relationships<\/a>\u2062 without any basis specific to the\u200c facts of\u2064 such representation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Meet Jay Bratt.<\/p>\n<p>Bratt is one\u2062 of Jack Smith\u2019s prosecutors and top\u2062 aides.<\/p>\n<p>He allegedly improperly pressured Stanley Woodward, a lawyer representing a defendant \u200dindicted by Smith.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>He implied that the Biden Administration would \u200clook more favorably on Mr. Woodward\u2019s\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jcxCZt4oq3\">pic.twitter.com\/jcxCZt4oq3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 House Judiciary\u200c GOP \u2064 (@JudiciaryGOP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudiciaryGOP\/status\/1700147566032085281?\">September\u200b 8, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This could be\u2063 critical because, as \u200cJust the \u200dNews noted, Woodward also initially represented\u200d Yuscil Taveras, an IT worker at\u2062 Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>After Taveras spoke with a\u200b public defender,\u200c he agreed\u200b to turn state\u2019s evidence \u2014 which spared him a perjury charge, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4193068-jim-jordan-seeks-docs-from-jack-smiths-dealings-with-attorney-representing-defendants-in-trump-classified-records-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> reported, and led \u200dto additional counts added \u2063to Trump\u2019s indictment.<\/p>\n<p>The letter asks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/special-counsel-jack-smiths-office-contacts-georgia-gov-brian-kemp-trump-2020-election-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith\u2019s office<\/a> to produce information related to\u200b three specific areas regarding \u2063Woodward.<\/p>\n<p>First: \u201cAll documents and communications referring or relating to \u200dany appointment, \u200cmeeting, or\u2063 other visit by Mr. Woodward to\u200b the Justice Department, including the Office of the Special Counsel, concerning the representation of Mr. Nauta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second: \u201cAll\u200c documents and\u2064 communications between or \u2063among the Office of the Special Counsel, the Office of the Attorney General, or the Office of the Deputy\u200d Attorney General referring or \u2064relating to Mr. \u2062Woodward and his representation of \u200cindividuals involved in the matters before you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally: \u201cAll documents and \u2063communications referring or relating to Mr. Woodward\u2019s application to fill \u2063a \u2062vacancy on the Superior Court\u2063 of the District of Columbia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not this is a game-changer in any\u2063 way,\u200c shape or form remains to be seen;
