The city, known for its heavily Democratic \u2062leanings and its overwhelming support for Joe Biden in the \u200b2020 election,\u200d announced the event on Facebook. It stated that it\u2063 would collaborate \u200dwith \u200cvarious organizations, including the Alliance \u2062for Human Services,\u2064 Family Focus, Moraine Township, \u200band the Highland \u2064Park Community Foundation, to host the simulation on September 9.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Experiencing Poverty Firsthand<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Participants in this immersive experience \u2063will begin to experience what a\u2063 &#8216;month&#8217; in poverty \u200cfeels like,&#8221; the city explained. &#8220;Participants are put into situations in which\u200c they do not have \u2062enough resources and \u200dare \u2063forced to make\u2063 difficult choices\u200c that can negatively impact them \u200band their families. The outcome is increased awareness of the\u200b need for \u200dresources to support those living in poverty\u2062 to create \u200ca\u2062 more resilient health, human, and education sector in our local\u2062 area. \u2063Participation is free, \u200cbut registration is required.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the city&#8217;s plans faced \u200dswift and harsh criticism. Something that would give anything back to the people whose experiences you&#8217;re pretending to care \u200babout?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the public backlash, the city ultimately decided \u2064to cancel\u2064 the event.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>A Troubled History<\/h3>\n<p>This controversy is not the first time \u200dHighland\u2062 Park has\u2063 faced scrutiny.
