Are you worried about that?&#8221; \u2063the journalist asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are you?&#8221; Mikkelsen quickly retorted, with \u200ba laugh and a shake of his head.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re putting us on\u200c the spot, so\u200d you answer the\u200b question,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Arcel also chimed in, defending their casting choices. He explained that the film is set in 1750s Denmark, where people\u2064 of color were extremely rare. We do have a big plot line about a \u200bgirl of color who is\u2064 being subjected to racism. It was very rare to have\u2062 people of color in Denmark in the 1700s, almost nobody. She was \u200cprobably at the time the \u2062only one in the entire country\u200d of Denmark,&#8221;\u200b Arcel \u2062explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Arcel also addressed the new diversity \u200crequirements\u2064 in Hollywood, stating that they weren&#8217;t a\u2063 consideration \u2062during\u200c the movie&#8217;s development. He emphasized that the film aimed to accurately portray the historical\u2064 period.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a thought\u2064 in our mind. \u200bI think it would be a little weird. It&#8217;s just historical and how it was in the 1750s,&#8221; Arcel added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the criticism, &#8220;The\u200c Promised Land&#8221; tells\u200b the story of \u2064Ludvig Kahlen, a poor\u200c soldier who arrives in Denmark in\u200c 1755 with\u200d dreams of \u2064cultivating the \u200dland.
