In cars of \u2063many vendors. You know, there&#8217;s \u2064more and more electronics\u200c and \u2064software in this stuff. It \u2064does collect a lot of data. Today buying a car \u200dcomes with a\u200d surprise. In this respect,\u200b cars\u2064 are &#8230; the worst product,&#8221; said Lukasz Olejnik, a security analyst in a post on\u2063 X,\u2064 formerly known\u200d as\u2064 Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Vulnerabilities for Drivers<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCar makers have been bragging about their cars \u2063being \u2018computers on wheels\u2019 for years\u200b to promote their advanced features,\u201d the study said, but &#8220;the conversation about what driving\u2062 a computer means for its\u200c occupants\u2019 privacy \u2063hasn\u2019t really caught\u200d up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ashkan Soltani,\u200d executive director of the state privacy watchdog \u2062California Privacy Protection Agency \u2063(CPPA), said that \u201cmodern vehicles are\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-privacy-agency-to-investigate-how-automakers-record-and-use-driver-data\/\" title=\"California Privacy Agency to Probe Automakers' Driver Data Recording and Usage\">effectively connected computers<\/a> on wheels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re able to collect a\u2064 wealth of information via built-in \u2062apps, sensors, and cameras,\u200b which can monitor people both\u2063 inside and near the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mozilla said that\u200b automakers are gathering \u201cmore personal\u2063 data than necessary\u201d and \u201cfor \u200ca reason other than to operate your\u2063 vehicle and manage \u200btheir\u200d relationship with \u2064you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one \u200bof the car brands,\u2062 or 84 percent, said they could share personal \u200cdata with service providers, data brokers,\u200b and other businesses,\u2063 while 19 \u200cfirms, \u2064or 76 percent, admit to selling sensitive\u200b information.<\/p>\n<p>Shockingly, 14 firms,\u200c or 56 \u2063percent, said they would share\u2064 information with the government or law enforcement in response to an \u201cinformal\u2063 request,&#8221; which is a very low bar.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Atsushi Ikeda, the founder \u2063and vice president of a \u200dJapanese club for Tesla \u2064owners, operating \u200ba touchscreen\u200d display\u200c on the dashboard of his Tesla Model S in Tokyo on Jan. 27, 2023. (Yuichi Yamazaki\/AFP \u200bvia Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The majority, about 92 percent, of vehicle manufacturers, give drivers little to \u200bno control \u2063over how their personal data is collected or used.<\/p>\n<p>Automakers \u200dwere\u200b discovered by researchers to even collect \u201csuper intimate\u2063 information\u201d about drivers in \u201chuge quantities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nissan and Kia stated in their\u2063 privacy policies that they \u200btook information about a driver&#8217;s \u2064\u201csex life,\u201d while six of the companies in the \u2064study \u200bsaid they\u200d collected \u201cgenetic \u200binformation\u201d from \u2063their\u200c customers.<\/p>\n<p>Renault and Dacia, which belong to the \u200csame French conglomerate, were the only brands in the study that give drivers the option \u2064to \u2063have \u200btheir personal data deleted, because of strict European Union\u2062 privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably no coincidence though that these cars are only available in Europe \u2014 which is protected by \u200cthe robust General\u200d Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)\u200b privacy law,\u201d \u200dMozilla researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cIn other\u200c words: car brands often do whatever they can legally get away\u2062 with to your personal data.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Failing to Protect Customer Information<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Mozilla Foundation also admitted that\u200c they could not confirm whether any \u2063of the carmakers met its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dhs-extends-deadline-to-obtain-real-id-by-19-months\/\" title=\"DHS Extends Deadline To Obtain REAL ID By 19 Months\">minimum security standards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is concern that companies \u2062are failing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/big-automakers-are-failing-to-protect-customer-privacy-report\/\" title=\"Automakers neglecting customer privacy, says report.\">properly encrypt collected personal information<\/a>, which \u201cmight explain their frankly embarrassing security and privacy\u2063 track \u2062records,\u201d said researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen \u200dof the companies \u2064received a \u200d\u201cbad track record\u201d for leaks, hacks, and breaches in the \u2063study.<\/p>\n<p>Hacking is\u2063 the top privacy concern, followed\u200d by car thefts,\u200c break-ins, and bad actors \u200cgaining \u2062control of car systems\u200d and disrupting services.<\/p>\n<p>Driver data privacy\u2063 breaches have\u2062 become the most common cybersecurity threat against automakers over the last decade, accounting for 30 percent of all threats, according\u200d to\u2064 Privacy4Cars.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Andrea Amico, the\u200d founder\u200d and CEO of Privacy4Cars, told \u2062the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/03\/your-car-might-be-making-personal-info-vulnerable-to-hackers\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> that car owners are now having to face hackers who are &#8220;attracted\u200b by\u2064 the\u200b increasing \u2062amount and value \u200cof data that companies\u200c in\u200c the broad auto ecosystem collect\u201d and &#8220;regular bad people who will \u2062leverage these technologies to stalk, harass,\u200b defraud,\u200b steal, and harm people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Hackers are able to use software\u2064 and hardware \u200cto gain control over \u200ba vehicle through\u2062 bugs \u200bin software, to gain access to the\u2064 usernames and passwords of apps, which\u200c allow the vehicle to be unlocked and \u200cstarted \u200bremotely, <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/columnist\/komando\/2023\/04\/06\/how-keep-hackers-taking-control-your-car\/11594806002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> \u2063reported.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Criminals can also hack \u200binto a vehicle\u2019s telematics data, which allows them to \u2063pinpoint the exact location of \u200da \u200ddriver, or use tools to access the \u2064onboard diagnostic ports of cars\u200d to \u2063replicate and create new keys to steal a vehicle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In May, Toyota admitted that a cloud\u200d data hack \u2064exposed\u2062 the location information of 2,150,000 drivers between November 2013 and April 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Data Privacy a Nationwide Concern<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Owing to lax\u200c privacy standards across the board, Mozilla noted that consumers have limited ability to protect their privacy when it c<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Major automakers are neglecting customer privacy, as per a recent study by the Mozilla Foundation.
