The 2001 attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,977 people, were orchestrated by\u2063 Mohammed under the authorization of Osama bin Laden.<\/div>\n<p>Hearings on the case are set to resume on September 18, a week after the 22nd anniversary of the attack. In August, the Biden administration&#8217;s consideration of plea agreements that could spare the defendants from the death penalty drew disappointment from some families\u2062 of the victims. They expressed their opposition in letters to President Biden, urging him not to \u200dproceed with the plea deal.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Nicole Malliotakis also voiced their opposition to the plea deal, advocating\u2062 for the death penalty. Senator Cruz commended \u200cthe Biden administration&#8217;s decision to reject the deal, stating, &#8220;Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the four other plotters who planned the 9\/11 attacks are mass \u200bmurderers who deserve the death penalty.
