In June, Mr. Modi received a warm welcome at the \u2062White \u200bHouse during \u2064a four-day state visit to\u2063 Washington, where both leaders issued a lengthy joint statement and a long list of objectives centered on economic security,\u200d defense, and strategic partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting supply chains to India from China is expected to be \u200ba major topic of discussion during\u200c the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has \u200bbeen encouraging U.S. firms to invest in India\u200c in key technology areas, according to Richard \u2063M. Rossow, a senior adviser and \u2063the chair of the U.S.\u2013India policy studies at the\u2064 Center for Strategic and International Studies\u200c (CSIS).<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>During a CSIS press briefing\u200d previewing the G20 summit, Mr. Rossow noted\u2062 that if U.S. companies are \u200cseeking to leave China, there&#8217;s been &#8220;direct \u2062encouragement&#8221; for corporations\u2064 to explore India as another regional manufacturing base.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>India or Bharat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>India\u2063 is hosting the G20\u2062 Leaders&#8217;\u200d Summit, at a time when\u200c Mr. \u2062Modi&#8217;s government is pushing to change the country&#8217;s name from India\u2063 to Bharat.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>According to historians, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/india-sanskrit-name-bharat-modi-g20-72782ba81aa67dcf7e197a98fec9b5f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bharat<\/a> \u2062 is an ancient Sanskrit word\u2062 that stretches back to early Hindu writings. The word\u200d also means India in Hindi.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the dinner \u200cinvitations sent to guests attending the \u200dG20 summit, Indian\u2063 President Droupadi Murmu \u200dwas referred to as &#8220;President of \u2063Bharat&#8221; \u200brather than &#8220;President of India.&#8221; \u200dThis has led to\u2063 speculation\u200d that Modi&#8217;s \u200dnationalist party \u200dis attempting to eradicate what it considers to be colonial-era names. Nationalists in the country\u2063 argue that the name India was \u2063introduced by British colonialists and \u2063is\u200b therefore \u200ba &#8220;symbol of slavery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the\u200b summit, some human rights groups have raised concerns about the Modi government&#8217;s embrace of a\u200b far-right\u2064 Hindu nationalism\u2064 and \u200cpoor\u200b human rights\u200b record, which\u2062 they claim has created a hostile environment for minorities, especially Muslims, in the country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In addition, India\u2019s close relationship with Russia and its \u200cunwillingness to issue strong statements condemning the war in Ukraine has been a concern for\u200d Washington and its European allies.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ukraine Divides G20<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At \u200bthe conclusion of last year&#8217;s \u200dsummit, the\u2064 G20\u2063 leaders agreed to a\u2064 joint communiqu\u00e9\u2064 in which\u2063 they &#8220;strongly condemned&#8221; the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Most members \u2064strongly\u200c condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it \u2064is causing immense \u200dhuman suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy,&#8221; the declaration stated.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c declaration, however, also indicated that there were &#8220;other views and different \u2063assessments of \u200cthe situation and sanctions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still unclear how this year&#8217;s communiqu\u00e9 will address the conflict in Ukraine. \u2063While some\u2064 countries demand strong language on the Ukraine conflict, India, the \u200dcurrent G20 president, is attempting to strike a balance in the\u200d summit\u2063 declaration.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukraine issue will be a big challenge for India, according to Stephanie Segal, a senior fellow\u2064 at the CSIS.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;India,\u200d much like its predecessor, Indonesia, in the G20 presidency, has a real \u200cchallenge here in trying to forge consensus around issues in a group that is, in fact, quite fragmented, and fragmented in large part because of Russia\u2019s ongoing aggression in Ukraine,&#8221; she said during the CSIS press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>She believes that framing the summit\u2063 as one focused on global economic challenges will enable \u2063leaders to achieve some progress and consensus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>President Biden&#8217;s key priority at this year\u2019s summit \u2062is \u2063to propose strengthening multilateral development banks, particularly the \u2064World \u200bBank and the\u2062 International Monetary Fund (IMF), as\u2063 an alternative to China\u2019s coercive lending, according\u2062 to the White House.<\/p>\n<h2>Putin, Xi Skip\u200b Summit<\/h2>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin didn&#8217;t attend the 2022 summit in\u2063 Bali, Indonesia, and will\u200c also skip this year&#8217;s meeting in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chinese leader Xi Jinping also announced that he wouldn&#8217;t attend the \u200dsummit, leading \u200cto speculation about his \u200babsence.<\/p>\n<p>President \u2063Biden expressed\u200d disappointment after learning that the Chinese leader wouldn&#8217;t be attending.
