a new \u200bcontract proposal from General \u2062Motors that its leaders said was a &#8220;solid offer&#8221; that includes a 10 \u2064percent wage\u200c hike.<\/p>\n<p>GM,\u200c the biggest automaker in the United States with over 92,000 employees, put\u2063 forward on\u200c Thursday its latest \u2064offer\u2063 for a new\u200b contract\u2063 that includes wage\u200c increases and\u2062 a \u2064higher \u2063starting wage,\u200d which\u200c the\u200c company hopes will be enough to avert an\u2063 economically damaging strike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think this is a solid offer,&#8221; \u2063the GM&#8217;s 2019 agreement with UAW workers that runs out\u200d on Sept. 14, with the looming deadline\u200c triggering worries about a possible strike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We still have work to do, but we\u200b wanted \u200cto make this offer\u2064 to show our good faith\u200c efforts to keep the process moving,&#8221; GM said in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Under GM&#8217;s latest proposal, most employees would\u200b get a\u200d 10 percent wage\u2064 hike and two additional 3 percent \u2064lump-sum payments over four years. There&#8217;s \u2064also a $5,500 ratification bonus, along with a\u2064 one-time $6,000 &#8220;inflation-recognition&#8221; payment, and an additional $5,000 in &#8220;inflation-protection&#8221; \u200dbonuses over the life of the four-year contract.<\/p>\n<p>But while GM called the offer &#8220;solid&#8221; and labeled its efforts in\u2064 talks\u200b as \u200dbeing in &#8220;good\u2063 faith,&#8221; the UAW president shot it down.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Fain,\u200d who represents 146,000 at Detroit&#8217;s \u2063Big Three automakers, said \u2062in a statement that GM had refused &#8220;to bargain\u200d in good \u2064faith&#8221; and called the company&#8217;s offer &#8220;an\u200b insulting \u2064proposal that doesn&#8217;t\u2063 come close to an equitable agreement for America&#8217;s autoworkers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The clock is \u200bticking.\u200d Stop wasting our members&#8217; time. Tick tock,&#8221; Mr. Fain added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u2063   UAW members recently\u2062 voted overwhelmingly \u2064to authorize a strike\u200d at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, setting up a tense final\u2063 stretch of\u200b contract negotiations.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Lot of\u2064 Back \u200cand Forth&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>    \u200d  Despite \u2062the tough talk on the terms\u2062 of the new agreements, Mr. Fain has\u2062 conceded that the union will most likely have to\u2064 give up some of its demands to reach \u2064deals\u2062 with automakers.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of \u200bback and forth in bargaining,\u201d he told the Associated\u2064 Press in an interview on Wednesday. \u201cNaturally, when you go into \u2063bargaining, you don\u2019t always get everything\u200b you demand. Our workers have high expectations. We\u2064 made a lot of sacrifices\u2062 going \u2063back to the \u2063economic \u200drecession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to double-digit wage hikes, Mr. Fain has \u2064called for ending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-members-authorize-strike-at-detroit-three-automakers\/\" title=\"UAW members approve strike at Detroit Three automakers.\">tiered wage system<\/a> that pays new hires less than veterans, reinstating cost-of-living adjustments, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-president-rejects-gms-insulting-proposal-for-10-percent-pay-hike-as-strike-looms\/\" title=\"UAW President dismisses GM's 'offensive' offer for 10% pay raise ahead of imminent strike.\">restoring defined-benefit pension \u2063plans<\/a> that\u2063 the automakers ended \u2064years ago for new employees.<\/p>\n<p>He \u2064told the \u200dAssociated Press on Wednesday\u200d that the plan is for \u200dworkers \u200dto go on strike if \u2064the companies haven&#8217;t\u200b reached \u200ca tentative agreement \u200cby\u200b the time their national contracts end \u2064at 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 14.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the plan,&#8221; he\u2064 said.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis has said it\u2063 will give the union \u2062a counteroffer by the end of the week, while Ford said it has a track record of being able to reach creative solutions with the UAW.<\/p>\n<p>Last \u200cweek, Ford said \u200bit had offered a 9 percent wage increase through 2027 and 6 percent\u200d lump-sump payments, which is far less than the 46 percent wage increase the UAW is seeking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall,\u2063 this offer is \u200bsignificantly\u200c better than what we estimate workers \u2062earn at Tesla and foreign automakers operating in the U.S.,&#8221; Ford \u200bPresident and CEO Jim Farley said in a statement on Aug. 31.<\/p>\n<p>The union said \u200cFord&#8217;s offer\u200c was well below its demands, with Mr. \u2063Fain saying \u200dit &#8220;insults our very worth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Big Three automakers have said they want to reach a deal that&#8217;s fair to\u2062 workers \u200cbut that also gives the companies flexibility as the industry shifts to electric \u200dmodels that have \u200bfewer parts and require \u2062less \u200blabor.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2062 a video statement on \u2063Thursday, \u200bGM President Mark\u2064 Reuss called for a\u2064 balanced solution to the impasse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need a \u2063fair contract that both rewards our employees and protects the long-term health of our business,&#8221; Mr. Reuss said<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain criticized General Motors&#8217; contract proposal as &#8220;insulting.&#8221; GM, the largest US automaker with 92,000 employees, presented a new offer that includes a 10% wage increase.
