Joe Manchin Criticizes Biden Administration&#8217;s Oil and Gas \u200dLease Cancelation<\/h2>\n<p>Sen. Joe \u2064Manchin (D-W.Va.) joined Republican lawmakers in criticizing the Biden administration&#8217;s cancelation of seven oil and gas leases\u2063 in Alaska, decrying the move as making the United States more energy dependent.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Department of the Interior said it would withdraw more\u200d than 13 million acres in the National Petroleum \u2064Reserve in \u2063Alaska (NPR-A) from oil and gas leasing.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, seven leases that cover 365,000 acres in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Artic Refuge) and\u200c NPR-A that\u200d were awarded to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) in 2021 would be canceled.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Related Stories<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/biden-admin-cancels-7-trump-era-oil-and-gas-leases-in-alaskas-arctic-region-5487430\">Biden Admin Cancels\u2063 7 Trump-Era Oil and\u2063 Gas Leases in Alaska&#8217;s Arctic Region<\/a> &#8211; 9\/6\/2023<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/alaska-board-of-education-votes-to-support-ban-on-transgender-athletes-on-girls-high-school-teams-5484648\">Alaska Board of \u200cEducation Votes to Support Ban on Transgender Athletes on Girls&#8217; High School Teams<\/a> \u2062 &#8211; 8\/31\/2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The move has drawn criticism from Republican and Democrat lawmakers\u200c in Alaska and\u2062 elsewhere, \u2064along with local leaders and Native American groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can\u2019t explain to the American\u200b people why we would willingly become more dependent on foreign\u2062 oil imports,\u200c eliminate good paying \u2062American jobs and drive up \u200dthe cost of our electric bills \u200dand gas prices across the country,&#8221;\u200c Mr. Manchin, \u2063the chairman \u2063of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is yet another example of this administration caving to the radical left with no regard for clear direction from \u200cCongress or American energy security,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Let\u2019s be clear\u2014this is another \u2062attempt\u200b to use executive\u200b action to circumvent a law to accomplish what this \u200dadministration does not have the\u200c votes to achieve in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canceling valid leases, removing acreage\u2062 from future\u2062 sales, and attempting to reduce production in Alaska while taking steps\u2062 to allow Iran and Venezuela to produce more\u2062 oil\u2014with fewer environmental regulations\u2014makes no sense\u2064 and is frankly embarrassing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064NPR-A is \u2062a 23 million-acre area in Alaska&#8217;s \u200cNorth Slope. (Mario Tama\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The canceled leases \u200bwere part of a\u200d sale encompassing the non-wilderness Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge.\u200b These leases stemmed from \u200da congressional mandate in the\u2062 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which required \u2063two lease sales of not \u200cless than \u200c400,000 acres within the Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge. The first sale was \u200dheld in\u200d January 2021, and a second sale must occur before Dec. 22, 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">These leases were suspended \u200cin \u2062June 2021 following\u2063 Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland&#8217;s Order 3401 (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.gov\/sites\/doi.gov\/files\/elips\/documents\/so-3401-comprehensive-analysis-and-temporary-halt-on-all-activitives-in-the-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge-relating-to-the-coastal-plain-oil-and-gas-leasing-program.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>)\u200c due to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-cancels-7-trump-era-oil-and-gas-leases-in-alaskas-arctic-region\/\" title=\"Biden cancels 7 Trump oil leases in Arctic.\">multiple legal deficiencies<\/a>\u200d in the underlying record supporting \u2063the leases.&#8221; The department also proposed new regulations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/2023-09\/Proposed%20NPR-A%20Rule%20RIN%201004-AE95%20508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>) for the NPR-A \u2062that would &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alaska-democrat-faces-uncertain-future-following-bidens-latest-environmental-move\/\" title=\"Alaska Democrat's future uncertain after Biden's environmental decision.\">ensure maximum protection<\/a>&#8221; for the &#8220;Special Areas in \u2063the reserve while supporting subsistence activities for Alaska \u200cNative communities.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>&#8216;Biden&#8217;s War on\u2062 American\u2063 Energy Continues&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Oil and \u200bgas development contributes a significant share of \u200beconomic development and jobs across Alaska&#8217;s indigenous and rural North Slope communities, according to AIDEA. Those communities \u2063also rely on funding for services, schools, health, housing, \u2062and emergency services that comes from taxes on oil and gas activities, the agency said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Wednesday, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), said the Biden administration&#8217;s move\u2063 &#8220;rewards our adversaries\u2062 and hurts\u200b American families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident \u200cBiden\u2019s war on American energy continues,&#8221; Mr. Barrasso said in \u2062a statement. &#8220;With the stroke of a pen, his administration is placing more than 40 percent of the National Petroleum Reserve off \u2062limits for petroleum production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He is ignoring \u2063the law and making us more \u2064dependent on \u200bforeign oil,&#8221; he\u2064 continued. &#8220;Not only is this bad energy policy, it\u2019s bad foreign\u200c policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jim \u200dRisch (R-Idaho) took to Twitter on Wednesday,\u2064 accusing President\u2064 Biden of \u2063&#8221;stifling domestic energy production in pursuit of\u2062 his \u2063radical green agenda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His cancellation of leases and complete disregard for \u200dthe\u200c law pushes us even further away from energy independence,&#8221; Mr. Risch said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
