The major tech giants operating within the EU will be required to ban certain user-targeting \u200bpractices and prevent the spread of \u2064&#8221;harmful&#8221; content.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has emphasized that the goal of these \u2063regulations is to create a safe online environment. The EU Internet Law, which came into effect on August 25, empowers major online platforms to remove \u200dcontent deemed as &#8220;disinformation&#8221; or &#8220;hate speech&#8221; by Brussels bureaucrats.<\/p>\n<h2>EU Internet Law Being Rolled Out<\/h2>\n<p>European Commissioner Thierry Breton, the EU&#8217;s internet \u2064enforcer, expressed his satisfaction with the new law, stating that it provides\u200b consumers with more \u2063choices and fewer obstacles for smaller competitors. He believes that the Digital Markets Act opens the gates\u2063 to a more inclusive internet.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission has identified companies\u200c as gatekeepers if they provide core platform services that connect businesses and consumers, such as Google&#8217;s Chrome\u2062 search browser and\u200b Apple&#8217;s App Store. In addition to combatting &#8220;disinformation&#8221; and &#8220;hate speech,&#8221; the law also requires \u2062tech firms to be transparent about their algorithms\u2063 and ad targeting practices.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers will now have access to platforms&#8217; recommendation algorithms for ads and \u200cthe right to opt-out. Reporting illegal content under the DMA will also be easier. The law also strengthens safeguards for minors, including system redesigns, privacy measures, and mental health-risk assessments. Furthermore, ads targeting children \u200care now prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/from-impeaching-incitement-to-canceling-conservatism\/\" title=\"From Impeaching Incitement to Canceling Conservatism\">big tech firms<\/a> are also obligated to address content risks, enforce terms of service, expedite user\u2062 reports to Brussels, and publish annual risk assessments. They must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/european-union-targets-six-big-tech-firms-in-latest-crackdown-on-online-content\/\" title=\"EU targets 6 tech giants in new crackdown on online content.\">promptly remove offending content flagged<\/a> as problematic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u2064    All companies \u200cclassified as gatekeepers have a six-month timeline to comply with the DMA&#8217;s requirements. \u2063These requirements will\u2063 eventually be expanded to apply to all digital services starting in February\u2064 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Europe Cracks \u2062Down\u200b on Free Speech<\/h2>\n<p>    Commissioner Breton has emphasized the\u200b seriousness of compliance with the new regulations. He stated that his services\u200d will thoroughly enforce \u2062the Digital Services Act (DSA) and use their new powers to investigate and sanction platforms \u2063when necessary.<br \/>\n \u2064\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Complying with the DSA is not a punishment. \u2062It is an opportunity for platforms \u2063to reinforce their trustworthiness,&#8221; Mr. Breton said on social\u2062 media.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the enforcement measures, big tech companies will\u2064 be required to fund a permanent EC\u200b tribunal on disinformation, consisting of approximately 230 staff members who will \u2063determine what qualifies as approved content.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u2062 Offenders found to be in breach \u200cof\u2063 the DSA could face a significant fine of up \u200cto 6 percent of their global \u200bturnover.\u200d Repeat offenders may even be banned from conducting business in the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-5\">The initial round of DSA rules applies to 19 major digital platforms with at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-europes-crackdown-on-big-tech-could-affect-the-united-states\/\" title=\"Impact of Europe's Big Tech crackdown on the US\">45 million active users<\/a> in the EU. These platforms include social media apps, \u200dwebsites, and online retailers such as Alibaba AliExpress, Amazon Store, Apple AppStore, \u200dBing, Booking.com, Facebook, Instagram, Google Maps, Google Play, Google \u200cSearch, Google Shopping, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, X, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Zalando.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;These systemic platforms play a crucial role in our daily lives, and it is time for Europe to set its own rules,&#8221; \u200bMr. Breton tweeted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u2063   Commissioner Breton \u200dhas warned the\u2062 platforms that he will be extremely rigorous in enforcing the DSA. We will be investigating and sanctioning\u2062 them if necessary,&#8221; he \u2062stated.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, these repeated threats by Mr. Breton have faced criticism and mockery from some quarters. Many free speech advocates view these regulations as a means for progressive bureaucrats in Brussels\u2064 to censor dissenting voices worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So let&#8217;s be clear.
