Now, as Burning\u200b Man slowly empties, it\u2019s time to clean up.<\/p>\n<p>Burning Man organizers have three \u2062weeks to clean up any remnants of the makeshift city plopped across over 4 \u200dsquare miles (10 square kilometers) of the\u2064 Black Rock Desert in northwestern\u2063 Nevada, but a summer storm that left tens of thousands stranded in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/1-dead-70000-stranded-after-flash-flooding-interrupts-burning-man-festival-in-nevada-desert\/\" title=\"1 person killed, over 70,000 stranded due to flash flooding at 'Burning Man' festival in Nevada desert.\">ankle-deep mud<\/a> could alter that timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>The annual gathering, which launched on a San Francisco beach in 1986, attracts nearly 80,000\u2062 artists, musicians, and activists to the\u2062 sprawling stretch of \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">public land<\/a> for a weeklong mix of wilderness camping and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tens-of-thousands-still-stranded-by-burning-man-flooding-in-nevada-desert\/\" title=\"Thousands stranded by flooding at Burning Man in Nevada desert.\">avant-garde performances<\/a>. In a\u2062 normal\u200b year, the desert \u200cfloor is harder and easier to navigate, but flooding and deep imprints from vehicles\u2063 spinning\u200c tires in the muck have made traveling there more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>This week, many attendees descended on the airport in Reno, Nevada, to get \u200blast-minute flights home. Car washes\u200c at times turned away vehicles too caked in mud and clay, according to KTVN-TV in Reno. There are signs outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/massive-cleanup-begins-as-burning-man-party-is-over\/\" title=\"Cleanup underway after Burning Man party ends.\">nearby grocery stores banning disposal<\/a> of Burning Man-related trash and recycling in their bins.<\/p>\n<p>Eleonora Segreti, who lives in central Italy\u2062 and made her second visit this year \u200bto Burning Man, left the site early Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Leave no trace is \u201ca \u2064strong principle,\u201d she said \u200bTuesday after taking a shuttle to Reno-Tahoe International Airport. \u201cIf it is a matter of\u200c staying overnight one extra day to do the \u200dwork to clean up, most of the people are doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that sentiment is not felt by everyone. Jeffrey Longoria of San Francisco said since he started attending,\u2063 trash issues have gotten worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are starting to leave a trace,\u201d said Mr. Longoria, \u200c37, while cleaning his mud-stained boots outside of a Walmart in Reno. \u201cThey\u2019re forgetting the core principles of\u200b the burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The erosion of those core\u200d principals might be in part because many of the festival\u2019s original attendees have gotten older,\u200c he said, and there\u2019s a wave of newer attendees\u2014\u201cthe kind that have a couple hundred thousand-dollar RVs and are careless about the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A permit issued by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management requires Burning Man organizers to clear the area of debris after vehicles exit the desert, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) northeast of Reno. Burning Man organizers did not immediately\u2063 respond to questions from The Associated Press about how the rain\u200c will impact the cleanup timeline.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2064a media update Wednesday evening, organizers said \u201cindividuals who had to leave before their carpools and camps were ready to depart, and camps who needed to leave early due to\u200b the storm, are returning\u2063 to the event site today through\u200b Saturday to disassemble their projects, tear down their camps, and \u200bremove\u200c their \u200dpossessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The temporary closure of the area for Burning Man is in effect\u2064 for 66 days each year, according to the\u2062 BLM: 31 to build the makeshift city, nine for the main \u2064event and 26 for post-festival cleanup.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, \u200dafter the festival\u2019s return following a two<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/coachella-stagecoach-festivals-drop-all-covid-requirements\/\" title=\"Coachella, Stagecoach Festivals Drop All COVID Requirements\">-year hiatus due<\/a> to the\u200c pandemic, the Burning Man team narrowly passed its Oct. 7 inspection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it was extraordinarily and alarmingly close,\u201d the restoration\u200d team\u2019s manager wrote earlier this year \u2063in a post on the Burning Man website summarizing last year\u2019s cleanup efforts, while urging \u200battendees leave no trace.<\/p>\n<p>The post described 2022 as one of the\u200d \u201cmessiest playas in recent history\u201d\u2014evidenced by a 15-yard\u2062 (13 meters)\u200d dumpster filled with cardboard boxes, glass bottles, carpeted rugs and plastic. The cleanup team also collected more\u200d than 1,000 tent stakes\u2014\u201cthe \u2063most dangerous\u201d and abundant debris left behind, according to the post.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2022 inspection, BLM surveyed 120 different areas\u2063 chosen at random \u2064across the festival site for trash and debris, according to Burning Man\u2019s annual cleanup report. They failed eight of the tests last year \u2064and would not have passed if they \u2063had failed 12, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Cleanup also involves smoothing out the dried lake bed with large rakes\u200c attached to trucks and picking up trash on the frequented highways, according to BLM spokesperson John Asselin.<\/p>\n<p>Next month, teams made up of federal employees \u2063and Burning Man organizers will\u2064 again conduct a site inspection.
