Christmas Eve has been removed, and Juneteenth has been added. This means \u2062that employees will\u2062 now need to use their\u200c paid time off to celebrate the December holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Announced on August 31, the change also allows employees to earn extra holiday pay \u2062for working on \u2062Juneteenth, \u200bbut not on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope this will\u200b allow more\u2064 opportunities for celebration, reflection, and education,&#8221;\u200c emphasized Emory Healthcare\u200d CEO \u200bJoon Sup Lee in an \u200demail to employees. &#8220;[D]iversity, equity, and\u2062 inclusion at Emory Healthcare\u2064 (EHC) is about creating an environment of true belonging for our patients and team \u2062members, while ensuring equitable outcomes for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision to \u2064make this change came after Emory Healthcare \u2064sought\u200b feedback on its holiday\u2062 schedule. The email mentions that patients cannot schedule clinical\u2063 appointments on paid holidays, which led to a situation where adding one holiday meant removing \u2063another.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To minimize the \u200bimpact on patient care,&#8221; Lee explained, &#8220;we will not\u200d be adding another paid holiday to \u2063our calendars. Instead, starting January 2024,\u200c we will replace Christmas Eve \u2063with Juneteenth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone is pleased\u2063 with\u200d the new schedule. Hospital employees \u2064expressed concerns to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantanewsfirst.com\/2023\/08\/31\/emory-healthcare-observe-juneteenth-paid-holiday-nixes-christmas-eve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlanta News\u2064 First<\/a> that this change could create \u2062division between Christians and African Americans. Edwina\u2062 Clanton, the president of the NAACP chapter in Emory&#8217;s county, even warned of \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/emory-healthcare-replaces-christmas-eve-with-juneteenth-on-paid-holiday-calendar\/\" title=\"Emory Healthcare swaps Christmas Eve for Juneteenth on holiday schedule.\">potential anti-black backlash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sure it \u2064will\u2063 put anger\u200b in some \u200chearts,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Why do we have to\u2064 do this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u2064 the new schedule \u200ccould result in staffing shortages during one of the deadliest times of\u2063 the year. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/juneteenth-violence-shootings-killed-dozens-injured-during-saturday-shootings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, Juneteenth \u2063weekends\u2064 have been marred by mass shootings \u200cand other forms of gun violence,\u200d including incidents at <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/20-people-shot-1-fatally-juneteenth-celebration-chicago\/story?id=100177397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holiday celebrations<\/a> across the country.
