(But remember\u2063 what \u2062I said about caveats.)<\/p>\n<p>That may not sound so bad for President Joe Biden, but what his team should find more alarming is the fact that when asked whether \u201cAny Republican nominee would be \u200ca \u200bbetter choice than Joe Biden\u201d or the opposite, that \u201cJoe Biden would be a better choice than any Republican nominee,\u201d respondents \u200bchose\u2062 the generic \u201cany Republican\u201d over the incumbent president by a margin of 46 to 32 \u2014 well outside the \u2064poll\u2019s margin\u200b of error. (Almost a quarter of those polled, 22\u200c percent,\u2063 said neither\u200b of those statements reflected their \u200bviews.)<\/p>\n<p>Granted, when the question was reversed and \u201cAny Democratic nominee\u201d was \u2062matched up against former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/young-republicans-national-convention-release-results-straw-poll-trump-came-second\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, Trump came in second \u2014\u200b but by a much smaller margin of 44 to 38, \u2062which was within the margin \u200bof error, though not by much.<\/p>\n<p>Those can\u2019t be reassuring numbers for the White House. But it gets \u200dworse for them.<\/p>\n<h3>SSRS, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-church-membership-dips-below-50-for-first-time-poll\/\" title=\"U.S. Church Membership Dips Below 50% For First Time: Poll\">polling group<\/a>, asked \u200d391 Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents whether the \u2064Dems should \u200bput Biden up for\u2062 re-election next\u2063 year or nominate \u201ca\u200b different candidate.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Members of\u200d Biden\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/are-the-doj-and-media-letting-gretchen-whitmer-get-away-with-covid-19-nursing-home-deaths\/\" title=\"Are The DOJ And Media Letting Gretchen Whitmer Get Away With COVID-19 Nursing Home Deaths?\">party chose<\/a> someone other than Biden 2-to-1.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that to the \u200bresponses to similar questions asked\u2063 about former Presidents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-made-fun-obama-not-cussing-properly-new-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a> in 2010 (76 percent chose Obama) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-president-bill-clinton-76-gets-potentially-life-threatening-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Clinton<\/a> in\u2064 1994 (55 percent said \u200dClinton should be \u200bthe nominee). That\u2019s gotta\u2063 hurt.<\/p>\n<p>In an article covering the \u200crelease of the polling data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/07\/politics\/cnn-poll-joe-biden-headwinds\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a> noted some of the issues that the poll uncovered that\u200c are \u200clikely hurting Biden in this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerceptions \u200bof Biden personally are also broadly negative, with 58% \u2063saying they have an unfavorable impression of him,\u201d \u2062CNN wrote. \u201cFewer \u2062than half of Americans, 45%, say that Biden cares about people like them, with only 33% describing him as someone\u2064 they\u2019re proud to have as president. A smaller share \u200cof the \u2063public than ever now\u2064 says that Biden inspires confidence (28%, down 7 percentage points from March) or that he has\u200b the stamina and sharpness to \u2063serve effectively as president (26%, down \u20636 points from March), with those declines driven largely by Democrats and independents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/poll-reveals-americans-true-thoughts-bidens-age-asked-trump-answers-change-radically\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u200b age issue<\/a>, which \u200cone would assume will only loom\u2062 larger as\u200d time progresses \u2014 Biden is, after all,\u2063 older now than he ever was \u2014 \u200band now he\u2019s even older. And now he\u2019s even older. And now\u200d \u2026 \u2064you get the point. Biden is 80 today, he\u2019ll be 81\u200d on Election Day next year, and he\u2019ll\u2063 turn 82, Lord willing, 15 days later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoughly three-quarters \u2062of Americans say they\u2019re seriously concerned that Biden\u2019s age might negatively\u200c affect his current level of physical and mental competence (73%), and his ability to serve out \u2063another full term if reelected (76%), with \u200ba \u2064smaller 68%\u2064 majority seriously\u2064 concerned \u200babout his ability to understand the next\u2064 generation\u2019s concerns (that \u2064stands at 72% among those younger than 65, but just 57% of those\u200c 65 or \u2064older feel the same),\u201d according to \u2064CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The question of Biden\u2019s age has been out \u200dthere since even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-too-old-to-run-biden-wrestles-with-age-as-he-eyes-2020-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before the\u200c 2020 election<\/a>, and it doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019s going away anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to see how Democrats can \u200bsee anything positive in these poll results \u2014 except maybe for that caveat I mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Gluttons for punishment may review all 71 pages of the poll results below, or scroll past it for why these numbers may not be\u200c as \u200bbad for Biden\u2064 as they might seem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px auto 6px auto;font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: normal;font-size: 14px;line-height: normal;display: block\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline\" title=\"View CNN poll on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/669745288\/CNN-poll#from_embed\">CNN poll<\/a> by \u200d <a style=\"text-decoration: underline\" title=\"View The Western Journal's profile on Scribd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/480928840\/The-Western-Journal#from_embed\">The Western Journal<\/a> on Scribd<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>But remember: I \u2063said that there was a caveat, and it\u2019s an important \u200cone.<\/p>\n<p>SSRS conducted this poll \u2063for CNN by sampling a total population\u200d of 1,503 adults, and for\u2063 most of \u2062the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-supreme-court-rules-democrats-absent-from-state-capitol-can-be-arrested\/\" title=\"Texas Supreme Court Rules Democrats Absent From State Capitol Can Be Arrested\">political questions<\/a>, \u200bit further\u2064 reduced the sample \u2014 to\u200d 1,259 registered voters. That\u2019s <em>registered<\/em> voters, not likely voters.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an important distinction, because even in the high-turnout 2018 and 2020 elections, only about \u200b50 to 60 percent of registered voters actually \u2064cast their ballots. Surveying registered voters is interesting, and it certainly\u2064 can indicate \u2063the mood of the electorate \u2014 but it\u2019s not all\u2062 that useful \u200cfor making predictions about what 2024 will look\u2064 like. (It\u2019s a lot\u200d cheaper than trying \u200cto identify likely voters, however.)<\/p>\n<p>And for that matter, the general election is still well over a year away. Lots could happen between now and then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nikki-haley-predicts-biden-will-die-says-dems-really-voting-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including the deaths<\/a> \u200c \u2014 Heaven forfend \u2014 of some \u200bpretty \u200dmajor players, given their ages.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, all of this should \u2062be \u2063taken with a grain of\u200d salt, \u200cat least when \u2064it\u2019s \u2062thought\u200c that \u200bthese results accurate reflect \u200bwhat reality will look like in 14 \u2062months.<\/p>\n<p>Polls of likely \u2064voters taken, say, a year from now\u2062 will be much more instructive, but we\u200b all know that polling rarely predicts the \u2064final result \u200cof\u200b any \u2064election perfectly. We can\u2019t know for sure until we see what happens at the\u200c ballot box next\u2064 autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Lord willing\u2063 and \u200cthe creek don\u2019t rise, that is.
