The unnamed witness tried the door, and \u2064finding it\u200d locked, called the Orange County Sheriff&#8217;s Office,\u00a0according to\u2064 an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/21098095-kenneth-robert-stough-jr-arrest-affidavit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest affidavit<\/a> for Mr. Stough.<br \/>\n \u2063\n  <\/div>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/land-back\/\" title=\"\u2018Land Back!\u2019\">deputies arrived<\/a> \u2062at\u2063 the scene, two employees from an armored car service were \u200bwaiting outside for the\u200b business&#8217;s \u200dusual cash\u2063 deposit, a report showed. \u200dThey&#8217;d found the doors locked, too.<\/p>\n<p>Orange County deputies found\u2063 Mr. Paquette\u2019s\u2064 car parked in front \u2064of the store and called his residence. Another employee provided authorities with\u200b keys to the business.<\/p>\n<p>Upon entering, Orange County deputies found\u00a0a\u200c gruesome scene.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Terrance Paquette was killed while working alone at \u200ba convenience store in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 3,\u2063 1996. (Courtesy of the Orange \u2062County Sheriff&#8217;s Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Terrance Paquette \u200dwas dead on the bathroom floor, lying in a\u200d pool of blood with stab wounds to his head, neck, trunk, chest, \u200babdomen, and extremities.<\/p>\n<p>There was more\u200d blood splattered around the store, including on the\u2064 beverage freezer and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/approximately-80-masked-looters-hit-san-francisco-area-nordstrom\/\" title=\"Approximately 80 Masked Looters Hit San Francisco-Area Nordstrom\">front door lock<\/a>. An analyst with the Florida Department of Law\u2062 Enforcement (FDLE) later found that \u2063blood didn&#8217;t match Mr.\u2063 Paquette&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Missing from the store&#8217;s safe was $1,000 cash that another employee had dropped in the night before, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u200c seemed to investigators that the \u2062killer injured himself in the \u200cattack, walked throughout the store,\u200b took the \u2062money from the safe, and left, locking the door behind \u200bhim with Mr. Paquette&#8217;s keys. The keys were\u200c never found.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators found\u200b no leads and closed the case in September 1997 without \u2063identifying any \u2063suspects, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    An FDLE analyst uploaded the DNA profile\u2063 from the freezer-door blood sample into the Combined DNA Index Database (CODIS), but no matches were \u2064ever made, authorities said.<\/p>\n<h2>Cold \u2063Case<\/h2>\n<p>    Detectives reopened the \u2063case in July 2003 and took mouth swabs from witnesses to compare them to the DNA in the blood samples from the store. Failing to identify any suspects\u200b in the \u200ckilling of Mr. Paquette, authorities closed the case again, \u2063according to the affidavit.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sixteen years \u2063passed, and the case was reopened for a second time \u2064in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>This time, Detective Brian\u200d Savelli was assigned\u2062 to the investigation. Det. Savelli and other investigators at the Orange\u200d County Sheriff\u2019s Office \u2064believed the blood \u2062left splattered around the store \u200ccould lead them to the killer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blood pattern showed movement in the scene by the suspect\u2014from the bathroom to the beverage freezer, to behind the counter where money was taken, and finally on \u200dthe entry-exit door, where the suspect more than likely escaped the scene,\u201d Det. Savelli wrote in the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, \u200bFDLE contracted with Othram,\u200b a forensic genetic genealogy laboratory in The \u200cWoodlands, Texas. Othram was asked to \u200canalyze the blood \u200dsample from the beverage freezer door.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Othram in Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/beer-cans-recovered-from-a-dumpster-help-send-florida-man-to-prison-for-life\/\" title=\"Dumpster-found beer cans lead to life sentence for Florida man.\">helps law enforcement \u200dagencies identify human remains<\/a> and resolve missing persons \u2064cases through DNA testing. (Courtesy\u2064 of Othram, Inc.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Through that partnership, it was determined the DNA from the murder scene matched\u200c relatives common to two people\u2014Kenneth Robert Stough \u2064Sr. and Carol Ann Crawford, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Detectives then learned the pair had three offspring\u2014Kent Allen Stough, Keith Owen Stough, and \u2064Kenneth \u2063Robert Stough Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Savelli discovered that \u2062Kenneth \u2064Stough Jr. had lived across the\u200b street from Terrance \u2064Paquette at the time\u2064 of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>So, he placed a tracking device on the younger Mr.\u200c Stough&#8217;s vehicle in August 2021. Then, he watched and waited.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen days later, Mr. \u200cStough went into a Citgo convenience store in Eustis, Florida.\u00a0He parked next to a public dumpster and tossed in a gray plastic bag\u2063 full of beer cans before driving away, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Savelli retrieved Mr. Stough\u2019s bag of discarded\u2062 Budweisers and\u00a0passed the\u2063 cans\u2064 to the Orange County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2063 Crime Scene Unit, where analysts swabbed them for DNA samples.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the\u200b DNA on the cans matched the blood left behind on the Lil\u2019 Champ freezer door.<\/p>\n<p>About six weeks later, on Nov.\u200c 2, 2021,\u00a0 Mr. Stough was arrested for first-degree murder with \u2063a \u200cweapon and robbery with a deadly weapon, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d previously been \u200darrested for\u2062 disorderly intoxication and\u200b resisting arrest in January 2004, \u200band for driving under the influence in July 2007,\u00a0according to records of\u200b the Orange County Clerk of the Court.<\/p>\n<p>He was given \u2063a ticket for driving with\u2064 unsafe equipment in\u2064 August 2007, records show.<\/p>\n<p>After a five-day trial in Orlando, the jury found \u200cMr. Stough guilty. On Aug.\u200d 25, he\u200d was sentenced to life in prison for the killing of Terrance Paquette.<\/p>\n<p>Three days later, Mr. Stough made a\u200d request for a new trial. But Judge Rand Wallis denied it, according to court documents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>New Help for Old Cases<\/h2>\n<p>    \u200b  \u201cOur role was just building a more expansive [DNA] profile from the original \u2063crime scene \u2063evidence,\u201d David Mittelman, founder and CEO of \u2064Othram, \u2062told The Epoch Times.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>To connect evidence collected from a crime scene to a potential suspect, specialists \u2062analyze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/viral-video-mother-presses-6-year-old-daughter-are-you-a-boy-or-are-you-a-girl\/\" title=\"Viral Video: Mother Presses 6-Year-Old Daughter: \u2018Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?\u2019\">genetic markers<\/a>. Genetic markers refer to specific identifiable parts of an individual&#8217;s DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional genetic profiles logged \u2064in CODIS have only 20 markers used to \u200ddetermine a potential DNA match.<\/p>\n<p>Othram\u2019s new DNA sequencing technology utilizes hundreds of thousands of genetic markers. This results in a more comprehensive DNA profile and a higher chance of identifying an accurate\u200d match during a criminal investigation, Mr. Mittelman said.<\/p>\n<p>Othram created a new DNA profile\u200c for the original blood sample left on the beverage \u2063freezer that was more extensive than the DNA profile created in 2003, Mr. Mittelman said. \u2062Then,\u200c FDLE\u00a0 authorities\u200b used it, doing &#8220;great work&#8221; to find a genealogical match, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Othram\u2019s \u2062new DNA technology\u2014Forensic Grade Genome Sequencing (FGGS)\u2014is helping solve\u2063 cases nationwide, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 1974, authorities \u2064found skeletal remains of <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenneth Stough Jr., a Florida man, was found guilty and given a life sentence for brutally stabbing an unarmed convenience store clerk 73 times.
