CBS extended summer reality favorite \u201cBig Brother\u201d so it could run into November.<\/p>\n<p>Networks are trying to fill gaps created when\u2064 Hollywood writers walked off the job\u2062 in May, shutting \u2063down comedy and\u2062 drama sets just as they were gearing up to \u2062film fall shows. Actors joined the picket lines in July for \u2063the first dual Hollywood work stoppage in 63 years. <\/p>\n<p>The fall season has been a staple of \u2062American TV \u200bfor decades, the time \u2063to roll out the\u2064 best that broadcast TV has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going\u2064 to be \u2063a patchwork of different \u200bgenres and whatever they have in the can that they \u200ccan run,\u201d media consultant Brad Adgate said of the broadcast schedules.<\/p>\n<p>New episodes of scripted shows\u2063 will be in much shorter supply. ABC\u2019s hit comedy \u201cAbbott Elementary,\u201d Paramount Network\u2019s top-rated\u2063 drama \u201cYellowstone\u201d and NBC\u2019s long-running crime series \u201cLaw &#038; Order\u201d\u200b will show reruns.<\/p>\n<p>ABC\u2019s entire Thursday \u2063night lineup consists of game shows: \u201cCelebrity Wheel of Fortune,\u201d \u201cPress Your Luck\u201d and \u201cThe $100,000 Pyramid.\u201d The Walt Disney-owned network\u2063 has no\u200b new scripted \u200bprogramming on its fall \u200bschedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove over, Hot \u2063Labor Summer. It\u2019s time for Sad TV Fall,\u201d the Los Angeles Times wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CATERING \u200dTO OLDER VIEWERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Broadcast television already\u200b faced major challenges as younger audiences \u2063switched to streaming. <\/p>\n<p>The average age of \u200cbroadcast viewers was \u200b62, according to Nielsen data from November of last season, compared with 40 on streaming.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the biggest drama on \u2062broadcast draws\u200c around 10\u200d million viewers, \u2062compared with\u200d roughly\u200c 20 million\u2063 a decade ago. <\/p>\n<p>Adding to the tumult, ABC has\u200c gone dark in \u2064nearly\u200c 15\u200b million homes because of\u200c a\u200c dispute between Disney and\u200d cable TV provider Charter\u2062 Communications.<\/p>\n<p>While the strikes compounded problems for broadcast executives, they said \u200bthey had planned ahead\u200d and applied lessons learned when\u2062 COVID-19 abruptly halted \u2063production, \u2063forcing them to rewrite schedules and seek overseas \u2062programming they could bring\u200b to U.S. audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve navigated through the pandemic and that has helped us think about how to prepare for \u2064this,\u201d said \u200cDan Harrison, executive vice president of program planning\u2062 and content strategy for Fox Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Fox \u200cis bringing back Ramsay\u2019s \u201cKitchen Nightmares,\u201d which ended a decade\u200d ago, on Mondays and will continue his\u2063 \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen\u201d series on\u2063 Thursdays. <\/p>\n<p>The network also will benefit from \u2062its recent focus on\u200d adult animation. \u200cNext to new \u2062episodes of \u201cThe\u200d Simpsons,\u201d \u201cFamily Guy\u201d and \u201cBob\u2019s Burgers,\u201d Fox will introduce \u201cKrapopolis\u201d about a city \u2062run by a family of humans,\u200d gods\u2062 and \u2062monsters. Writing of those shows was completed \u2064well before the strikes because\u2063 animation takes longer to produce.<\/p>\n<p>Comcast\u2019s NBC started some of its drama productions earlier than usual \u2062in \u2062preparation\u2064 for a potential strike, said Steve Kern, senior vice president of\u200b program planning and strategy for NBC Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>NBC \u200dhas\u200c scheduled fresh episodes of\u2064 five scripted dramas, including \u201cMagnum P.I.,\u201d newcomer \u201cFound\u201d and a Canadian series, \u201cTransplant.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur schedule is\u2063 largely returning intact,\u201d Kern said.<\/p>\n<p>One\u200b thing missing\u2062 from\u2064 NBC: new installments in creator Dick Wolf\u2019s \u201cLaw &#038; Order\u201d \u2064and \u201cChicago\u201d franchises. The network will air \u2062repeats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018YELLOWSTONE\u2019 \u2064JOINS SUNDAY LINEUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the shake-ups, executives see opportunities. <\/p>\n<p>Paramount Global\u200c hopes to \u200dturn new fans\u2062 on to \u201cYellowstone,\u201d which has been running on the Paramount Network cable channel and streaming on Peacock. \u200d <\/p>\n<p>The first season of the \u2064drama \u2064about a\u200c wealthy ranch owner played by \u200cKevin Costner will air on CBS, also owned by Paramount, after \u201cSunday Night Football\u201d and \u201c60\u200b Minutes.\u201d \u200c <\/p>\n<p>For scripted\u200b shows, CBS will run the British edition\u200b of hit comedy \u201cGhosts,\u201d and the first international version\u200c of the \u201cNCIS\u201d franchise, set \u2063in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers can turn to streaming services\u2062 for new series,\u2064 though they too have seen popular dramas such \u2064as \u201cStranger Things\u201d and \u201cEuphoria\u201d shut down \u200bby the strikes. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix just released \u201cOne Piece,\u201d a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga series about pirates, and Apple TV+ will release\u2063 a new season of \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d\u2064 next week.
