But I also\u2062 knew that it would detract from the clean narrative centered on the negative\u2062 impact of \u200cclimate change and thus\u2062 decrease the odds that\u200b the paper would pass muster with Nature\u2019s editors and reviewers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Three\u200b Unspoken Rules<\/h2>\n<p>According to Mr. \u200dBrown, the first thing \u2064an &#8220;astute climate researcher&#8221; must know is that his or\u2064 her work should support the mainstream narrative.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This narrative \u200bholds that the effects of climate change are <strong>&#8220;both pervasive and \u2062catastrophic,&#8221;<\/strong> and that the best strategy to \u2063address it is through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scientist-says-he-omitted-full-truth-from-paper-to-fit-top-journals-climate-change-narrative\/\" title=\"Scientist admits concealing truth to align with top journal's climate change narrative.\">massive government-subsidized programs aimed<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/landmark-climate-study-says-melting-arctic-wont-lead-to-more-severe-cold-weather\/\" title=\"Landmark Climate Study Says Melting Arctic Won\u2019t Lead to More Severe Cold Weather\">reducing greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>,\u2062 rather than adaptation measures that could make people less vulnerable to the impacts of the changes, such as more resilient infrastructure and more air conditioning, or better forest management to prevent wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To\u2064 put it bluntly, climate science has become less about \u2063understanding \u2062the complexities of \u200dthe world and\u200b more about serving as a kind of Cassandra, urgently\u2062 warning the public about\u200b the dangers \u200bof climate change,&#8221; Mr. Brown \u2063wrote. &#8220;However understandable this instinct may \u200bbe, it distorts a great\u200d deal of climate science research, misinforms \u200cthe public, and\u200d most importantly, makes \u200bpractical solutions more difficult to achieve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>As an example, Mr. Brown pointed to\u2062 another recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-05224-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature paper<\/a>, which suggests \u2064that for each ton of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/france-isnt-meeting-its-own-paris-climate-accord-commitments\/\" title=\"France Isn\u2019t Meeting Its Own Paris Climate Accord Commitments\">carbon dioxide emission<\/a> there is a $185 &#8220;social cost&#8221; in terms of \u2063heat-related\u2063 deaths and \u200dcrop damages. The paper&#8217;s authors, he said, never mention \u2064that climate change is not the dominant driver for either of these two impacts.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;Heat-related deaths <a href=\"https:\/\/thebreakthrough.org\/issues\/energy\/human-deaths-from-hot-and-cold-temperatures-and-implications-for-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been declining<\/a>, \u2063and crop yields <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/key-crop-yields?stackMode=relative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been increasing<\/a> for \u200ddecades despite climate change,&#8221; he explained, noting that including these facts \u2063in the paper would violate the second unspoken rule, which is to ignore or downplay practical actions people can take to overcome the negative effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;To acknowledge this would imply that the world has succeeded in \u2064some areas despite climate change\u2014which, \u2062the thinking goes, would undermine the motivation for emissions reductions,&#8221; the climate scientist wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bthird rule, according to Mr. Brown, is to use metrics that will produce the most\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbas-most-valuable-player-which-five-players-made-the-daily-wires-mvp-rankings\/\" title=\"NBA\u2019s \u2018Most Valuable Player\u2019: Which Five Players Made The Daily Wire\u2019s MVP Rankings?\">eye-popping numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the California wildfire paper, the researchers looked into the risk of wildfires burning more than 10,000 acres \u200din a single day, a metric that doesn&#8217;t have much practical value but generates numbers that can impress editors, reviewers, and the media.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;Why is this more complicated and less useful\u200c kind of metric so common?
