Their green energy efforts support \u2062the electrification of the transportation sector via\u2062 coal, and \u200btheir wind-powered electric vehicles and\u2062 trains are designed to displace imported oil. But \u200cthe military utility of China\u2019s environmental claims is cloaked with the added propaganda benefit of a green patina.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It was a \u200byear ago, on Aug. 30, 2022, when Joe Biden\u2019s\u200d climate czar John Kerry,\u200c former\u200b secretary\u200d of\u200d state and formally the U.S. special envoy on climate change, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/ddo2k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proclaimed<\/a> that\u200d China has \u201cgenerally speaking, \u200coutperformed its [climate] commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The reality on the ground in China tells an entirely\u200d different tale \u2014\u2063 one that \u2064should thoroughly embarrass and discredit Czar Kerry \u2014 if that\u2062 were\u200b even possible in today\u2019s regime media of environment \u2063cheerleaders.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200bone decade, 2010 to\u200b 2020,\u2063 China\u2019s coal-fired electricity generation <a href=\"https:\/\/energyathaas.wordpress.com\/2022\/10\/31\/putting-chinas-coal-consumption-in-context\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rose\u200b roughly 57 \u2063percent<\/a>, with \u200cChina consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-57018837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than half<\/a> of the \u200dworld\u2019s coal. <strong>China\u2019s carbon footprint is\u2063 billowing up under a massive\u200d wave of coal use with\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/chinas-coal-rush-threatens-emissions-target-pledge\/ar-AA1g2ZE8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">243 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity permitted or under construction in 2022<\/a>. The nation\u2019s hunger for \u200ccoal power is so \u2062acute that \u201c8 gigawatts of\u200d previously shelved projects were revived\u201d in the first half\u2064 of 2023 \u2014 equivalent to 10\u200c times the maximum output (when the wind is \u2062blowing just right) of Texas\u2019 massive <a href=\"https:\/\/quickelectricity.com\/wind-turbines-in-texas\/#:~:text=The%20nationwide%20installed%20capacity%20surpassed,and%20627%20individual%20wind%20turbines.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roscoe Wind Farm<\/a> \u2014 the largest in Texas, with 627 wind turbines\u2062 sprawled over 100,000 acres.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Put into context, China is building or plans to build the equivalent of the entire operating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/report\/BTL\/2023\/03-capacity\/article.php#:~:text=Capacity%20changes%20for%20fossil%20and,GW%20will%20retire%20in%202024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. coal \u2063fleet<\/a>, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/chinas-coal-rush-threatens-emissions-target-pledge\/ar-AA1g2ZE8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">23 percent<\/a>. China\u2019s <a speechify-initial-font-size=\"20px\" style=\"font-size: 20px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/chinas-coal-rush-threatens-emissions-target-pledge\/ar-AA1g2ZE8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reversal of plans<\/a> not to construct new\u2062 coal power comes within one \u200dgigawatt\u200d of\u2062 an entire year \u200dof <a speechify-initial-font-size=\"20px\" style=\"font-size: 20px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=55439#:~:text=Annual%20coal%20retirements%20averaged%2011.0,to%2011.5%20GW%20in%202022\">American coal-fired powerplant retirements<\/a> alone \u2014 this is on top of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-a-liberal-think-tank-did-chinas-bidding-on-climate-change\/\" title=\"How a Liberal Think Tank Did China\u2019s Bidding on Climate Change\">coal power capacity<\/a>, which is nearly \u200d <a speechify-initial-font-size=\"20px\" style=\"font-size: 20px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/530569\/installed-capacity-of-coal-power-plants-in-selected-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five times that of the U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8d5b332d807101e813d332817234611a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8d5b332d807101e813d332817234611a\"><\/div>\n<p>In contrast, America\u2019s coal fleet has been shrinking since 2007. Last year, the U.S. had under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=54559#:~:text=Of%20the%2055%2C943%20MW%20of,and%20monthly%20electric%20generator%20surveys.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">201 gigawatts of coal-fired power capacity<\/a> \u200b\u2014\u2064 that\u2019s after more than 9 \u200cgigawatts of plant retirements each\u200b year from 2012 \u200cto 2021 and additional projected retirements equivalent to\u2062 almost 7 gigawatts per year through 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Not well-endowed with its own large oil and natural gas\u200b reserves, \u2063China\u2019s energy\u2062 push can be seen through the\u2062 lens of a national imperative to achieve energy independence. In recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/chinas-july-crude-imports-rise-17-year-year-2023-08-08\/#:~:text=Still%2C%20oil%20imports%20were%2017,the%20same%20period%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China has imported 10-11 million barrels of oil a day<\/a>. But its expanding fleet of electric vehicles promises to \u2063displace much of that demand with coal-powered cars.<\/p>\n<p>Further, \u2062 <a speechify-initial-font-size=\"20px\" style=\"font-size: 20px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/analysis\/countrv\/CHN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China\u2019s ongoing embrace of coal-to-liquid production<\/a> allows the nation to convert its vast\u2063 coal reserves into high-quality fuel and\u200c synthetic lubricants \u2014 \u2063similar to the efforts of Nazi Germany with\u200b its\u2062 coal reserves during WWII. However, the\u200c challenge from an environmental standpoint\u2064 \u2014 as if \u200dChina cared \u2014 is that converting coal \u200dto \u2062gasoline, \u2064diesel, or jet fuel\u2063 produces double \u2064the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/environmental\/energy\/coal-liquid-efficient-gasoline1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carbon\u2063 dioxide emissions<\/a> as refining those fuels from crude oil.<\/p>\n<p>John Kerry epitomizes the self-absorbed Beltway elite. As the formal U.S. special envoy on climate change, Kerry spent four days in mid-July in the PRC\u2063 being lied to by the CCP. Both \u2062countries\u2063 committed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-envoy-kerry-says-china-climate-talks-constructive-complicated-2023-07-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to keep 1.5 alive<\/a>\u201d \u2014 referencing the unenforceable\u200d and infeasible promise to\u2062 keep global temperatures from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius above an arbitrarily set global average.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f0519edeb0db8502998ea16efa760db fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3f0519edeb0db8502998ea16efa760db\"><\/div>\n<p>China \u2064isn\u2019t \u201coutperforming\u201d its climate \u201ccommitments\u201d at all, nor is it \u201ckeep[ing] 1.5 alive.\u201d \u200dRather, it\u2019s mashing its carbon-black jackboot on \u200dthe accelerator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chinas-coal-boom-shows-its-empty-climate-commitments-are-red-not-green\/\" title=\"China's coal boom exposes its false green claims on climate commitments.\">coal-fired power plant\u2064 construction<\/a>. The agreed-upon fiction is that China is heading for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/an-energy-sector-roadmap-to-carbon-neutrality-in-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peak carbon emissions<\/a> in 2030. But\u2063 Kerry doesn\u2019t care about\u2062 these lies \u2014 talk for the sake of feeding his \u200cego\u2064 is his game. In fact, \u200dhe helpfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-envoy-kerry-says-china-climate-talks-constructive-complicated-2023-07-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">added<\/a>, \u201cWe \u2014 our team and\u2064 the United States administration \u2014 came to Beijing\u200c in order to unstick what \u200bhas been stuck since almost\u200b last August.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace\u2019s communist mouthpiece in Beijing, Li Shuo, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-envoy-kerry-says-china-climate-talks-constructive-complicated-2023-07-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commended<\/a> Kerry\u2019s trip, \u200dsaying, \u201cFurther engagements should help unlock more ambition in reducing coal\u2064 consumption\u201d \u2014 because, of course, \u201cunlocking more ambition\u201d is clearly the goal while China accelerates the \u2064pace of coal power plant construction.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing\u200d with the theme of praising talk for\u200c the\u2062 sake of itself, the federally chartered\u200b U.S. Institute for Peace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usip.org\/publications\/2023\/07\/what-does-john-kerrys-visit-mean-us-china-climate-cooperation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opined<\/a>, \u201c[A]ny progress\u200d toward a shared climate agenda cannot be taken for\u2064 granted \u200dafter nearly\u2062 two years of frozen relations.\u201d Even \u200dso, Ilaria Mazzocco, \u200dan expert \u200din Chinese business \u200dand the economy for the Beltway\u2019s \u200dCenter for Strategic and International Studies, dryly\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/assessing-special-envoy-kerrys-visit-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> that the CCP is \u201cunlikely to revise its climate targets since\u2062 a more rapid timeline on phasing out\u2063 coal\u2062 could\u2062 affect economic growth and energy security\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bottom\u2064 line is that \u200bChina\u2019s energy policy threatens to make irrelevant\u2062 blockades of \u2064China\u2019s oil imports through the Strait of Malacca. This would remove what was once a powerful \u200ddeterrent \u200cto\u200c Chinese aggression against Taiwan and other nations\u200d in the \u2062region.<\/p>\n<p>But the brilliance of China\u2019s energy\u2062 strategy is\u200c how the CCP\u200b has cloaked its \u200cefforts in a cape of \u200cgreen, allowing Czar \u2064Kerry and his court to remain \u2063blissfully blind to its\u2063 military utility.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ago that relying on China to address climate change was a mistake.
