Assemblymember Cecilia \u2062Aguiar-Curry (D-Davis) confirmed the existence of several bills related to fentanyl that\u200d still needed to be addressed on the floor, and a roll call vote was called with no debate or discussion \u200dallowed.<\/p>\n<p>The motion subsequently failed, with only Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) voting in favor. (Courtesy of Assembly Republican \u2063Caucus)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ACA\u200d 12 was crafted to \u200bmirror the language\u2062 of Senate Bill 44, also known as Alexandra\u2019s Law, named after 20-year-old fentanyl poisoning victim Alexandra Capelouto. The bill aimed to advise those convicted of distributing fentanyl about the potential murder charges if their actions led to someone&#8217;s death. However, it has been stuck in the Assembly\u2019s Rules Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember Dixon\u200c expressed frustration with the lack of progress, stating, \u201cI\u2019ve tried to talk with the chair of the committee and the speaker\u200d &#8230; and \u200dthey just don\u2019t want to move any kind of \u2062bill that \u200bwould require accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While nine bills designed to strengthen penalties for fentanyl distribution were introduced in the Legislature this year, only one remains. Assembly Bill 701, authored by Assemblymember\u200b Carlos Villapudua (D-Stockton), aims to add possession of one kilogram or more of\u2064 fentanyl to the list\u200c of controlled substances that qualify for longer prison\u200b sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Debates between lawmakers \u2063about how best to address the \u200dfentanyl crisis have stalled and watered down proposals,\u2063 according \u200dto critics. Assemblyman Juan Alanis (R-Modesto), co-author of ACA 12, emphasized the\u200b need for \u2062action, stating, \u201cContinued inaction on fentanyl is as outrageous as it\u200d is\u200c dangerous. This is unacceptable, and Sacramento \u200dshould be ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the proposal\u2064 prefer education and rehabilitation over\u200b punitive measures, but some argue that immediate action is necessary. Assemblymember Dixon highlighted the\u2064 urgency of the situation, as \u200dthousands of Californians are losing their lives to fentanyl.
