(Photo by \u200bBill Pugliano\/Getty \u200bImages)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/elizabeth-volberding\">Elizabeth Volberding<br \/><\/a>5:00 PM \u2013 Wednesday, September 6, 2023<\/p>\n<p>House\u200c Energy and Commerce Committee\u2062 Republicans, directed by Chair \u2063Cathy\u2064 McMorris Rodgers, communicated with Ford Motor Company\u2019s\u200d president and CEO James Farley, expressing \u2062concern about a new partnership with Chinese-owned Contemporary Amperex\u200b Technology Co., Limited (CATL). <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-officials-concerned-about-fords-partnership-with-chinese-ev-company\/\" title=\"GOP officials worried about Ford's collaboration with a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) firm.\">collaboration involves building lithium iron phosphate batteries<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Ford announced that the company would invest $3.5 billion in order to construct a lithium iron phosphate battery plant in Marshall, Michigan. <\/p>\n<p>Company representatives \u2062said that its purpose would be to supply growing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and create 2,500 new jobs. <\/p>\n<p>The battery \u2064cells will be manufactured using Chinese company CATL\u2019s technology, which was described in the announcement. <\/p>\n<p>26 \u200bRepublicans on the House\u200d Energy and Commerce Committee have\u2063 been in the process of examining the relationship between\u200d the multibillion-dollar American automaker and CATL.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to the Ford CEO on\u2062 Friday, Republican lawmakers, led by Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy\u200c McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Energy and Commerce Oversight Subcommittee Chair Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), questioned the comapny\u2019s recent agreement with CATL. <\/p>\n<p>They believe\u2063 it may be dangerous for national security.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cWhile Ford has labeled\u200c this project a \u2018commitment\u200b to American manufacturing\u2019 and asserts it will create 2,500\u200c new American jobs, we are concerned that Ford\u2019s partnership with a \u200bChinese company could aid China\u2019s efforts to expand its control \u200cover United States \u2062electric vehicle\u200b supply\u200d chains\u200b and jeopardize national security by furthering dependence on China,\u201d<\/strong> the Republicans stated in their letter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cWe seek to learn more about whether this partnership, and others like\u200b it, will potentially exacerbate our reliance on China. Should China gain control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/manchin-calls-out-podestas-remarks-about-china-being-big-players-in-us-ev-battery-production\/\" title=\"Manchin Calls Out Podesta\u2019s Remarks About China Being \u2018Big Players\u2019 in US EV Battery Production\">domestic electric vehicle production<\/a>, the United States would be exposed to serious national security \u2063risks at a\u200d time of escalating geopolitical tensions,\u201d<\/strong> they added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposal, which has been supported by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.), was considered for Virginia but never made it to the point of final consideration. <\/p>\n<p>Glenn Youngkin\u2063 (R-VA.) opposed the plant, citing that he believed China might have \u2062too\u200c much influence in the plan and arguing that \u201cCATL and the\u200d Chinese Communist Party would have full operational control over the technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cAt each business proposal, Governor Youngkin always seeks to find\u2063 the best outcome for Virginians and the Commonwealth,\u201d<\/strong> spokesperson Macaulay Porter explained to Fox News Digital. <strong>\u201cVirginians can \u2062be confident that companies with \u200dknown ties to the Chinese Communist Party won\u2019t receive a leg up from the Commonwealth\u2019s economic incentive packages.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite not being owned by the government, CATL\u200b has received funding from CCP-affiliated Chinese investors, according to a New York \u2063Times piece. <\/p>\n<p>Over the\u200c last decade, the Chinese government has\u2064 also taken proactive measures to support CATL and other electric vehicle industry businesses based\u2064 in China.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the founder of CATL Zeng Yuqun\u200b was \u2064identified as being affiliated\u2064 with the Chinese People\u2019s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee. <\/p>\n<p>The CPPCC is known as a \u201ccritical coordinating body\u201d that combines \u200drepresentatives of Chinese \u2063interest groups and is directed by CCP\u2019s Politburo Standing Committee, according to a United States government report published in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The CPPCC brought attention to Yuqun\u2019s work\u2063 with CATL in March 2022, in which he secured China\u2019s \u2062lithium supply chains. The supply chains are essential\u200b for EV production and other green energy\u200d development.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cFord should know that it \u200cis opening itself up to quiet \u2064manipulation and \u2062the malign influence of\u2064 the CCP by partnering with an organization run by a CPPCC member,\u201d<\/strong> \u200b Michael Sobolik, a part of\u2063 Indo-Pacific Studies\u200c at the \u2064American Foreign Policy Council, told the press in February.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Chinese Communist Party uses the Chinese People\u2019s Political Consultative Conference as a sham. \u200cIt is\u2064 neither consultative, nor is it about the Chinese people. The CCP uses the CPPCC to rubber-stamp the Party agenda, and hides behind\u2062 the organization\u2019s diverse membership,\u201d<\/strong> Sobolik added. <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a fig leaf of an organization \u2014 but it\u2063 does play a substantive role when it comes to \u2018united\u200c front\u2019 work.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>National security\u2062 experts and former top State Department officials have\u2062 expressed concern\u2063 that the Ford-CATL partnership could be \u200ba Chinese effort to take advantage of tax incentives\u200b provided by\u200b the Inflation Reduction\u2064 Act in\u2063 working with U.S. businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP lawmakers concluded their letter, requesting \u2062the full licensing agreement between \u200cFord and \u200cCATL, copies of all communication between Ford or government\u2064 representatives about the proposed facility, and clarifications on CATL\u2019s control \u2062over the building and\u2064 its operations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen we \u200cformally receive the letter, we\u2019ll\u200c respond and again\u200d correct rampant misinformation about this project. Here are the facts: Ford alone is building and will own \u2064and run this battery plant in Michigan. We\u2019re \u200ddoing that instead of putting a Ford battery factory in another \u200dcountry \u2062\u2014 or\u200c exclusively buying these\u200d batteries made in China, like our\u2062 competitors do,\u201d<\/strong> Melissa Miller, a\u2064 spokesperson\u2063 for Ford, told Fox News Digital. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The letter was signed by at least 26 Republicans on the House \u2062Energy and Commerce Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
