Aisha \u2064Wahab (D-Hayward), passed the Senate on a 31\u20135 vote and will now head to Gov. Those outside of the system are \u2063called the Dalits, or the \u201cuntouchables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though caste-based discrimination was outlawed by the Indian government \u200bin 1948, several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-fauci-allies-coordinated-articles-defending-natural-origin-of-covid-19\/\" title=\"Report: Fauci &#038; allies coordinated articles defending \u2018natural origin\u2019 of COVID-19\">recent studies suggest<\/a> \u200dthat bias of such persists in various \u200bsettings \u2062including workplaces in both India and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Those in support of \u200dthe\u200d bill said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-survival-guide-for-conservatives-during-the-biden-years\/\" title=\"A Survival Guide for Conservatives During the Biden Years\">discrimination based<\/a> on one\u2019s caste, in this case, Indian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/like-something-out-of-black-mirror-how-an-australian-town-became-a-smart-city-overnight\/\" title=\"\u2018Like Something Out Of Black Mirror\u2019: How An Australian Town Became A \u2018Smart-City\u2019 Overnight\">social status<\/a>, bears similarities\u200c to\u200b other types of bias, such as racism, and thus\u2062 should be prohibited by law.<\/p>\n<p>Equality Labs,\u2064 one of the major sponsors of \u200cthe \u2064bill, said in \u200ba recent statement that it would \u201cbroaden legal protections for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aoc-and-squad-democrats-planning-to-skip-speech-from-indian-prime-minister-narendra-modi\/\" title=\"AOC and 'Squad' Dems to skip Indian PM Modi's speech.\">caste-oppressed communities<\/a> throughout the\u2064 state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, opponents of the bill argue that it \u200cwill\u200d do \u2064harm to the \u200cpopulation it deems to\u2063 protect.<\/p>\n<p>Ambedkar-Phule Network of \u200bAmerican Dalits and Bahujans,\u200d a nonprofit that represents Indians \u200bin the United States including the so-called \u201cuntouchables\u201d\u2014expressed opposition to the\u200b bill in a letter addressed\u2064 to Mr. \u2064Newsom and the state Senate\u200d Appropriations \u2062Committee saying because there is no official documentation to indicate a person\u2019s social status in India, the law would be meaningless in California as Indians can self-identify however they like.<\/p>\n<p>The letter\u2064 continues saying that labeling the American Dalits as\u2063 oppressed victims would create more social\u200d tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis targets \u200bmillions of \u2018upper caste\u2019 Indian Americans as oppressors (which is unconstitutional), and permanently labels us \u200bAmerican Dalits \u200das oppressed\u2063 victims,\u201d\u200c the letter, which\u200b was shared with The Epoch Times, said. \u201cThe implicit labeling \u2062of our communities \u200cas oppressed will eventually erase \u200cour\u2063 identities, because future \u200cgenerations of Dalit Americans do not want to be referred \u200dto as victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are reportedly\u200b close to 900,000 Indian Americans \u200dliving in California,\u200c according \u2062to the Indian American Impact, a national political organization\u2062 based in Ph<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California may become the first state to protect caste as an anti-discrimination category.
