Matt Orfalea showed The Federalist \u200ca June 7 email \u200dfrom YouTube saying his video\u2062 was \u201csuitable for all\u2064 advertisers\u201d after \u201cmanually reviewing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A YouTube\u200c spokesman Tuesday, \u2063however, told \u200cThe Federalist\u200c the video was just a\u2062 few\u200c months later banned from providing\u200d its \u2064creator ad revenue because\u2063 it contained \u201cdemonstrably false claims that could significantly undermine participation or trust in an electoral process.\u201d The \u2062spokesman did not answer The Federalist\u2019s question of exactly what information \u2063in the video was \u201cdemonstrably\u200c false.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With no other notification \u2064from \u200cYouTube, on Aug.\u200c 21, Orfalea found a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0rf\/status\/1696338210014564706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notice<\/a> \u2063 inside his channel saying a YouTube reviewer had \u200bdecided the video depicted or encouraged\u200d \u201charmful or dangerous acts\u201d and presented \u201csituations \u2064that may\u2062 endanger participants.\u201d The video consists entirely of quotes from Hillary \u2064Clinton,\u200b Donald \u2063Trump, a\u2063 few TV reporters, \u200dand some other Republicans and Democrats \u200bpublicly contesting election results from 2016 to 2020.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>YouTube demonetized and\u200b then deleted \u200cthis\u2062 same video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/election-denial-for-me-but-not-for\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">before<\/a>, in November 2022. At that time, YouTube also demonetized and\u200b deleted similar videos on Orfalea\u2019s channel, including videos that weren\u2019t public,\u2062 <a href=\"\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/youtube-hits-orf-again-as-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says Racket journalist Matt\u200c Taibbi<\/a>, who commissioned the videos. For these transgressions, YouTube gave Orfalea\u2019s channel\u2064 a strike, three \u2062of \u2063which \u2062result in a permanent \u2063ban from\u200b the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Those banned videos also simply clipped \u2063accurate news quotes of both Republicans \u200band Democrats making \u201cstolen\u200b election\u201d and \u201celection interference claims,\u201d Orfalea and Taibbi\u200d say. Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/youtube-hits-orf-again-as-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says he<\/a> \u201cargued to Google\u201d last year that the now-twice-banned\u2064 video \u201ccould not \u200bpossibly\u2063 be violative of any \u2062\u2018misinformation\u2019 guideline, as it was comprised entirely \u200bof \u2018real, un-altered clips of public figures \u200cmaking public comments.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c[T]hese videos are factual,\u201d Taibbi wrote on \u2063Nov. 18, 2022. \u201cThere are no statements taken out of context. \u2063No editing games\u2063 were played to make it appear someone\u200d is saying something he or she\u2064 did not.\u2063 This \u200dwas the\u2062 point of the exercise, to show what was actually said, when, and by whom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"xUj8dM2HKWFxOlo8RYtQNzawNen3JPTI0kGzV6wAXTbmCCZnuv7FrubWU9Kcq2IdBpGP\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ratio ratio-16x9\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title='\"Rigged\" Election Claims | Trump 2020 vs Clinton 2016' width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GOYQeIrVdYo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The video YouTube has banned \u2063twice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In \u200dJuly 2021, YouTube also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0rf\/status\/1412398884324847619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demonetized<\/a> Orfalea\u2019s\u2063 channel over a Starbucks commercial parody, \u2062notifying Orfalea, \u201cWe\u200d think it\u2064 violates our violent criminal organizations policy.\u201d His channel was later remonetized.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in June of this year, Orfalea says, \u2063he re-uploaded the \u201cTrump vs Hillary\u201d \u2062video to YouTube to verify the\u2063 company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/inside-youtube\/us-election-misinformation-update-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 2 claim<\/a> it had ended its \u201celections misinformation policy\u201d\u2062 after banning \u201ctens of thousands\u201d of videos. Immediately after the upload, the video was demonetized, Orfalea said, but after he appealed to \u2064YouTube, he \u2063received the June 7 email\u2062 saying a \u200bhuman reviewer had lifted the \u200ddemonetization.<\/p>\n<p>Then, sometime between\u200b June 7 and Aug. 21,\u200b the video was demonetized again. YouTube says it has closed Orfalea\u2019s\u200d appeal of its reversal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past\u2062 (for [example], when\u200c my channel \u2062was demonetized) I always received notifications \u200dfrom YT about it BUT \u200bI received no notification about this,\u201d Orfalea told\u200b The Federalist\u200d via email.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In an Aug. 31 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W-85SzvopN8&#038;t=465s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">livestream<\/a>,\u2063 Orfalea \u2063showed in his YouTube analytics that demonetization cut his \u200dvideo income by 90 \u2063percent. The analytics traffic curve also suggests the video\u2019s reach might have been artificially reduced.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn the last 6-8 months \u2014 hell, \u200bthe last \u20632-3 months \u2063\u2014 the landscape \u200cfor non-corporate\u200c media \u2064businesses has tightened dramatically,\u201d Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/youtube-hits-orf-again-as-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> last week. \u201cIndependent media content is increasingly hard to find via platform searches,\u2062 even when exact terminology, bylines, or dates are entered by users. Social media platforms\u2063 that \u2064once provided effective marketing and distribution \u2063at little to\u200c no cost are now difficult to navigate even with the aid of paid boosting\u200d tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recommendations generated by YouTube algorithms drive 70 \u2064percent \u2063of what people see on the\u200d world\u2019s largest video platform. More Americans use YouTube than even use Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2021\/04\/07\/social-media-use-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at 81 percent in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube parent company Google <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/02\/10\/google-is-losing-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controls 92 percent<\/a> of the world\u2019s search results. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-google-interferes-with-its-search-algorithms-and-changes-your-results-11573823753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> and other investigations have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-manipulates-search-results-report-2019-11?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google alters \u200cits search results<\/a> in ways that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/24\/dont-evil-axis-google-blacklisting-conservative-search-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefit leftists<\/a>. The lawsuits found this censorship affects hundreds of millions of Americans and targets not just \u200bfalse information but <em>true <\/em>information.<\/p>\n<p>Federal courts adjudicating this lawsuit also found, as plaintiffs\u2019 lawyer John\u2063 Sauer <a href=\"https:\/\/aaronkheriaty.substack.com\/p\/congressional-testimony-of-missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified\u2064 to Congress<\/a> two weeks ago,\u2062 \u201cclose connections and cooperation between federal national-security officials and the\u2063 mass-surveillance \u200cand mass-censorship\u2062 enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t\u200b just about statements from\u2063 individual \u200bhas-beens like Hillary Clinton, but official bodies like the DHS and\u200c the FBI,\u201d Taibbi\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/youtube-hits-orf-again-as-censorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted in 2022<\/a>. \u201cJust like Trump, those official organizations have \u200crepeatedly engaged in a\u200c form of \u2018election denial,\u2019 warning that upcoming elections will be packed full of efforts by foreign countries to \u2018amplify \u200bdoubts about the integrity of U.S.\u200b elections\u2019 and to \u2018hinder candidates\u200d perceived to be particularly adversarial\u201d to countries like China \u200dand Russia, by \u2064\u2018spreading disinformation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>YouTube\u2019s spokesman didn\u2019t answer these Federalist questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What\u2062 brought this video \u200cto \u200dthe \u201chuman reviewer\u2019s\u201d\u2062 attention \u2014 was it a\u200d complaint from \u2062a government\u200c official, an algorithm or AI scanning method YouTube uses, \u200dor something else?<\/li>\n<li>What information, specifically, in the video does YouTube consider \u201charmful or dangerous\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>Did the\u200c human\u2062 reviewer find\u200d any false information in the video? If \u200cso, what?<\/li>\n<li>Orfalea says he\u2019s appealed YouTube\u2019s decision and hasn\u2019t gotten \u2063an \u200danswer yet. How soon should he expect that response?
